Impassioned to encourage all women to rock their natural hair with pride Lekia Lee decided she wanted a billboard to promote this message. She especially wanted her 11 year old daughter Siira to understand that she should not feel any pressure to wear extensions, wigs or chemical straighteners and that natural is beautiful.
UK Billboards donated a double-sided billboard on the A4 West Cromwell Road in west London after Lekia failed to raise enough money through crowd-funding .
“Initially I wanted to write an open letter to the big brands asking them to be more inclusive and be more diverse. … But I thought, Why don’t I do a billboard? … So I called up UKBillboards and explained what I wanted to do and I was lucky enough for them to give it to me for free for two weeks,” Lée tells Buzz Feed.
“When I first saw the billboard, I was completely and totally excited. I was in tears. I’ve been working on this for a couple of years. I am so excited to see it come to fruition.”
She added: “[Society makes] us feel anxious about our hair, skin color. … So this is to empower black girls.”
Thank you Lekia! With love from all of us naturals!
