Curls Best of Both Worlds

by Leanne who lives in Berkshire

I’ve gone from loving having curly hair to absolutely hating it and wanting it to be poker straight.  But now a girl with curls can have it all.

The invention of the ceramic iron was the best thing for curly hair, before this you could try to straighten your hair but it never stayed straight.  The good thing is when we have had enough of the straight look we can go curly again.  Those people who have lank straight hair with no volume, have to decide to perm their hair and once that’s done there is no turning back.  I on the other hand can be curly or straight whenever I feel like it.  And to be honest curls win most of the time.Leanne Curly Baby

When I was little I had the tightest ringlets that used to just look so cute and form so well.  As my hair got thicker and I got older the curl was harder to manage, not sure if they ever trained hairdressers in how to deal with curls, or did they never see anyone who had curly hair???  No one could cut it properly, they would make it frizz, grow outwards instead of nicely down. I often wondered if hairdressers totally missed the chapter on curls.  I had some of the most awful haircuts and they preferred to chop all my hair off rather than work with it.

I grew my hair as a teenager and wouldn’t cut it short again, once you have a nice style and a hairdresser that knows how best to cut curls you can get some fabulous results.  There is still a real shortage of good hair products for curly hair and they seem to assume all curls frizz.  Mine don’t so what you end up with is a flattening effect and a product that is too heavy for the hair, or it ends up making it more fluffy. When curls are on the catwalk and in magazines you see a flurry of curl making products about, but these are for those who have straight hair and want a light wave more than a curl.  As soon as that trend has gone, you’re back to the same key 5/10 products that have been around for years.  Its about time they realised there are a lot of curly haired girls out there, that need a good range of products all the time.  The fact curls go in and out of fashion is fine for someone like me, my curls are here to stay and never will I have a disastrous corkscrew perm like those I saw friends have in my teenage years.

I may play at being straight sometimes, but curls are me and how people associate with me, the girl with the curly hair.

i could not agree more with Leannes comment that most products available are to treat frizz and not to enhance curls!!
