British Curlies - All About Naturally Beautiful Curls

If you are a woman who takes pride in your appearance and works hard to look good every day, then you know how awful it is to have a bad hair day. For some reason, nothing seems to work the way it's supposed to. You think, I did the exact same thing yesterday and my hair looked great so why does it look like a bird's nest today?
If you've had a day like this then you also know how negatively it can affect your mood and outlook on life. You don't feel confident, you are over self-conscious and you are constantly trying to fix what went wrong on you head. Start the week with a bad hair day, and the rest of your week might go the same way. It's understandable, though. How can you possibly put your best foot forward and have a positive personality if you are feeling uneasy about the terrible creation on top of your head. It makes you feel the same way as getting your teeth knocked out. Everything seems to be a chore and it is hard to keep a positive outlook on life.
Leave yourself a little extra time every morning to fix your hair if need be. That way, you don't have to trudge through your entire day feeling like a wreck. Plus if your hair looks good the first time, you'll have about a half-hour to kill. You will be able to relax, read the paper and not worry about your hair!

Do you spritz your hair with anything?
If so, what?
How often do you clarify your hair? (ie: with either ACV, or Brown Sugar or yoghurt or herbal rinses, etc..?)
Do you deep condition your hair?
If so, what do you use?
Does your hair have high or low porosity?
Just trying to gauge what it is that is making your hair dry one day and moist the next..
All the best
Anita Grant
Hey Anita,
I spritz my hair with water >.<
I have never clarified my hair… what does that even mean? lol
Yes I deep condition my hair at least once a week, but im waiting for my new moisture mask to arrive. Before I used just organix conditioner to deep condition with. I waiting for the shea butter mask by crown pride that one of the gurus suggested to me.
I just did a test and I think that my hair has low porosity.

Hi Curliek
How to clarify your hair and scalp of build up:
Regardless of which product you use you *may be* prone to build up because of your glands plus the slothing off of dead skin/scalp cells and not the product(s) you use. This is why it is always best to clarify your hair and scalp at least once a week (either with an ACV mix *OR* Baking Soda + Water mix *OR* herbs + ACV *OR* 100% pure unsweetened Apple Juice *OR* add baking soda to your shampoo).
Do the shower-scratch-scalp test.
After about 5 to 10 mins in the shower, gently scratch your scalp and if you notice a film under your nail that’s build up.
Yoghurt as an exfoliant and deep condish.
Yoghurt contains AHA (alpha hydroxyacid) an example of an AHA is lactic acid/sodium lactate which some
naturally curly heads use instead of vegetable glycerine. Lactic acid is found naturally in milk products & fruit. When used on skin or hair it does leave a very nice and soft feeling to it. AHAs are also a natural exfoliant too.
Hair Mask Recipe:
Prep time required = 10 minutes
1. Take a small pot of all natural yoghurt
2. Add a quarter teaspoon of honey.
3. Add a couple of drops of your favourite hair loving essential oil
4. Put the mixture on your dry, clean hair
5. Cover with Cling Film
6. Leave on for 15 to 20 mins.
7. Rinse
8. Enjoy the softness
Not suitable for those with milk intolerance or Ovo-Lacto Vegetarians
Brown Sugar:
Exfoliating your skin is great for improving circulation plus it sloughs off any dead skin cells and buildup.
Seeing as your scalp is also skin, why not show it some brown sugar love. Sugar dissolves hard & dry dead skin cells leaving the surface of your scalp soft and supple.
After experimenting with the brown sugar recipe from *Lorraine Massey’s book, Curly Girl, I decided to add my own little healthy hair growth twist to her infamous - cost efficient - scalp effective recipe.
Sulphur Rich Scalp Exfoliator
2 tablespoons of Demerara brown sugar
½ teaspoon of Molasses sugar (for the natural sulphur content)
2 teaspoons of Organic Papaya Oil (contains the enzyme papin a natural exfoliant that gently dissolves dead skin cells whilst moisturizing the scalp’s skin)
a) Mix all the ingredients together
b) Drench your hair fully in the shower
c) Scoop out the mixture with your fingertips
d) Bend your head forward and gently massage the mixture into your scalp.
Start from the nape of your neck, to the back of your head, to the centre, towards your temples and forehead.
e) Rinse thoroughly, follow up with our Babassu Shampoo.
Benefits:
Molasses - contains natural sulfur/sulphur which is a mild natural fungicide, that rehydrates & detoxifies cell fibers by allowing water & nutrients into the cells & toxins to flow out. Sulphur is one of the key building blocks for healthy hair growth. A lack of sulphur may weaken the skin cells causing irregular sebum activity on the surface of the scalp.
Brown Sugar - contains natural Glycolic Acid, an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) that helps to gently exfoliate dead skin cells.
Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse:
The best “Beauty Bargain in a Bottle”
WHY?
1. It’s tonic action irrigates the skin & promotes the circulation of blood into the small capillaries.
2. It’s a great antiseptic that prevents the production of bacteria & yeast.
3. It dissolves excessive fatty deposits on the surface of the skin and reduces itchy, peeling or scaly skin conditions.
4. Vinegar balances the natural pH of skin & hair and controls the natural oil (sebum) levels.
Vinegar contains minerals & trace elements - here’s a brief synopsis:
Potassium - cleansing astringent.
Calcium - anti aging properties that regulates cell differentiation (and cell division) plus controls the thickness of the epidermis.
Magnesium - works with amino acid to synthesis proteins like collagen.
Copper - assists with melanin production.
Iron - used in the formation of red blood cells.
Silicon - a natural fungal defense mechanism found in plants & fruits. It should *not* be confused with the synthetic plastic polymer, silicone.
Phosphorus - a component of DNA & RNA both essential for all living cells.
Chlorine - a component of the salt that is also known as a powerful disinfectant.
Plus Vitamins C, E, A, B1, B2 and B6, beta-carotene and Vitamin P (bioflavonoids) - more than your daily average ;0) , Acetic acid, Propionic acid, Sulfur/Sulphur, Lactic acid, Enzymes, Amino acids and roughage (made up of potash, starch or apple pectin - in the case of Apple Cider Vinegar).
ACV Rinse:
Use either Apple Cider Vinegar OR Coconut Vinegar as a final hair rinse to get rid of hair and scalp build up, help remove dirt, dead skin (scalp) cells and/or silicone based (polymer plastic) product ingredients left behind causing a gunkiness on the scalp and hair.
1. Mix about 5 tablespoons of ACV with 500 ml of shower warm water.
2. Stir well for 10 minutes, strain and pour the liquid on your hair.
3. Massage it well into your scalp
4. Rinse & shampoo
I hope this helps and makes sense - typing really quick.
Must go and get dinner.. yippeee a take away at last.. what a treat!

Luckily, I don’t have too many bad hair days. I deep condition my hair once a week and put some shea butter on my hair as and when needed. I also only use natural products on my hair which seems to help too.
The only thing I don’t do is spritz my hair with water, I’ve found this does not agree with my hair at all. Be it filtered, bottle, or boiled water.. It just dries my hair out. I know a lot of natural hair sites advise u to do this, but it just doesn’t work for me. If anyone knows of any alternatives, they’ll be greatly appreciated.
my hair looks better today than it has done in ages! im hoping and praying that it dries like this when i next wash it…

Your stylist should avoid being too accurate when cutting, each curl needs to be assessed and cut independently to achieve a natural look.
Alex Kingston, WOW is what we say. She took our breath away in Moll Flanders! I think most British Curlies spent the time watching her curls in action. Seriously though Alex Kingston is a real Icon for staying true to her curls despite the pressures of fame and Hollywood.
