British Curlies - All About Naturally Beautiful Curls

Belle Interviews the Gorgeous Nikia!

by Belle British Curlies Contributor

I’m not about to get all power fist on you and denounce all combs, My signature style is gel twists, and until recently I would break out into a cold sweat if I didn’t have time to twist my hair.

However a few months ago I decided to accept my curls or lack there of, and embrace my undefined hair, in part this was due to discovering fellow blogger, model and my natural hair muse Nikia Phoenix. Nikia rocks a TWA and rarely does anything other then wash and go, I caught up with Nikia this last week to tackle the issue curl definition

Naturalbelle: Your hair also looks great how do you maintain your low maintenance look?

Nikia: I am a wet-and-go kind of girl. Aside from the weekly shampoo and conditioning treatment, every other day I rinse my hair with cold water, and use Free Your Mane Daily Detangling conditioner as a leave-in. Then I give my coils a little shine with the Restorative Hair Oil. On days when I'm really in a rush, I let the steam in the shower do its job then I finish my hair off with the Free Your Mane Refreshing Spray. The weather in Los Angeles is really dry, so I have to make sure to give my hair the extra moisture it needs. That means I try to deep condition it either once a week or once every two weeks.

Natural belle: Many women natural and non natural still believe in the term “good hair” and believe you should not attempt to embrace natural hair unless you have perfect coils and waves, or manipulate your hair to do so, what are your thoughts?

Nikia: Good hair is relative.I think we need to redefine what that term means.I like to think that good hair means healthy hair whether it's super short and kinky or super long and silky.I appreciate women that embrace their hair in its natural state. That image is powerful and inspiring.

Naturalbelle: What tips do you have for any newly natural women, who are finding it difficult accepting their curls?

Nikia: I think it's really important for all women to love their hair no matter what texture it is.  We all get frustrated with the length and the different types of kinks and coils we have.  The grass is always greener, right.  But you have to learn to work with what you've got.  You were specially created with the hair type you have for a reason.  The more you accept your hair for what it is, the more you'll grow to love it.
