Carlos Flores Curl Genius is Back!

by British Curlies

Carlos Flores Curl Stylist

Carlos Flores has been in the hair industry for over 11 years. His talent and passion is cutting and colouring curly hair along with teaching clients how to care and maintain their curls.  He uses the dry hair cutting technique. He has earned rave reviews on many websites from his curly clients.

British Curlies sat down with Carlos to learn more from the curl master on the trade secrets of getting the best out of your curly hair and his take on the British curly scene.

British Curlies: Is there a method that works best to cut curly hair?

Carlos: For me, there is only one way to cut curly hair and that is dry. Cutting curly hair wet is like playing poker.  You get the luck of the draw and not too many curlies have been lucky.  I feel that cutting dry gives you the best read on the curls.  You get what you see.

British Curlies: How can you tell if a client's curls are damaged?

Carlos: Most of the curly hair I see I would not consider damaged.  It is just a victim of bad habits.  Curly hair is very forgiving and just like a muscle has muscle memory. Once a good hair care routine is set in place, it will bounce back.

British Curlies: What is a must do for curly hair textures?

Carlos: With curly hair, there are a few do's and don'ts. The biggest "do" is to condition every day. Curly hair is so dry that it's sole purpose in life is to find moisture.  So, give it the moisture it needs or it'll find it in all the wrong places...through humidity!

British Curlies: On your trips to London do you find the curly hair scene inspirational or abysmal?

Carlos: We now live in a time where it is ok to have and be proud of your curls.  So, that in itself is inspiring. I do find it abysmal there are not as many products for curly hair in the UK as there is in the US, but that too will change in time.

British Curlies: What would you recommend curly hair textures avoid doing?

Carlos: The biggest "don't" is using shampoo. Shampoo is meant to remove oils.  9 out of 10 curlies do not produce a lot of oils. Curlies should find a cleanser that has no detergent agents.

British Curlies: What keeps you motivated after all these years to keep spreading the truth about the beauty of naturally curly hair?

Carlos: I find that the thing that keeps me motivated is the sheer joy of spreading the love of curls. I truly believe that no one has bad hair...just bad habits. So, I've taken it upon myself to break some of these habits one curl at a time!

On behalf of all British Curlies I would like to thank you Carlos for your generosity of spirit and being a true inspiration for curlies all over the world. We appreciate your time and continuing dedication to spreading the joy of naturally curly hair.

I have had my hair cut by Carlos and can promise all my curly sisters out there that he does indeed work miracles.  I’m not sure how he does it as it appears that he doesn’t cut much off but the end result is totally remarkable.  He’s truly my curly god xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I imagine he’s great with ANY kind of curls.  My hair is curly but not tight tight tight curls.

It is odd. New Yorkers are spoiled for choice, and there must be as much ethnic curly diversity in London.  London has no shortage of big name hairdressers, but none for curlies!

I have just had my hair cut by Carlos and I have cork screw curls.  He does not cut much but the advice and end look is amazing. It is worth every penny. I no longer have triangle shaped hair that is higher at the back than the sides. After he styled my hair I do not have ant frizz. One visit has me converted to Carlos’ hair routine. Even if you go once a year it’s worth it. He uses Devacurl products which make my hair look and feel amazing (I have tried every single product on this website and Quidad). I hope British Curlies stock these products soon! Thank you Carlos fopr the great cut and advice! Devacurl is available on Amazon. More info on the product on http://www.mydevacurl.com
