British Curlies - All About Naturally Beautiful Curls
One of the most constant things you would have heard during your relaxers days was “get rid of that unsightly new growth” yes that is right your own beautiful texture was regarded as nothing more than unsightly or something to banish. Well no more!
So you have woken up to the fact that you can walk away from the terror and anxiety of relaxers and embrace the stunning texture you were born with, what’s next?

Whether you transition or big chop immediately you need great products designed with your hair texture in mind. The reason why we offer a mix of both African American styling products from brands such as MYHoney Child, Bee Mine, Darcy’s Botanicals, Hairveda and Komaza Care to name a few and British afro hair care products from companies like Anita Grant, Curly Harmony and Crown Pride is because they have a global following of faithful customers who depend on their products as they have proven to be effective in delivering results that makes falling in love and maintaining your natural texture a breeze. We very much want to make making the right choice of enjoying your natural hair as easy and stress-free as possible.
A great routine to get started with is nothing magical but all about simplicity. Anything complicated will in time feel like a chore and frankly who has time to maintain over complicated hair routines. It’s not about being clever it’s about being consistent to see great results.
Step 1
Wash your curls and coils with a low sulphate cleanser like Darcy’s Botanicals Daily Cleansing Cream. Try to clean your hair and scalp at least twice per week. You may also consider using a shampoo bar like Hairveda’s Shikkai Bar or Anita Grants Shampoo Bars.
Step 2
Follow up with an amazing conditioner, one that delivers plenty of slip and moisture. Think Pumpkin Seed Conditioner from Darcy’s Botanicals or Moist 24.7 from Hairveda. Gently detangle your hair at this stage with a wide tooth comb. Work from the ends up to your roots. For thick hair use sectioning clips to work with smaller sections of hair at a time.
Step 3
Apply a leave-In Conditioner. Using a great leave-in conditioner like Kinky-Curly Knot Today or Whipped Creme Ends Hydration from Hairveda gives your curls and coils a great layer of protection from the elements.
Step 4
Seal in all that moisture with great oil. Olive Oil from your own kitchen cupboard will do or for something truly special the CoCasta Shikakai Oil from HairVeda or the Pumpkin Curl Elixir from Darcy’s Botanicals. At the same time give your scalp a nice little massage for 5-10 minutes. Feels great plus stimulates the blood circulation in your scalp!
Step 5
Style your curls! The options are a wide as your imagination but to see some great visuals download the Miss Jessie’s style guides and get to see what the true potential your natural hair represents. You are only limited by your willingness to learn. Great afro hair care styling products include Califa Care Styling Pudding , Califa Care Moisturising Cream, Avocado and Honey Twisting Cream, Madagascar Vanilla Styling Creme, Almond Glaze, Type 4 Curly Hair Creme and of course The Baby / Curly Buttercreme from Miss Jessie’s. These are just a few of the many on offer in the Curly Emporium. If you need further advice please submit to our Curly Hair Guide.
Protect your hair at night with a Stay On Satin Bonnet. This simple addition to your routine helps reduce breakage and frizz while you sleep by protecting your hair from snagging on your cotton pillowcase.
Finally it is good practice to deep treat your hair at least twice per month. A deep treatment can be as basic as a Hot Oil Treatment or as luxurious as a Curl Junkie Curl Rehab or Hairveda Sitrinillah Deep Conditioner or as unique as an Anita Grant Rhassoul Cube Treatment.
This is just a great starting point from which to begin your journey. Remember to eat right and exercise this all helps and makes a tangible difference in achieving great curlyhair! Chart your progress, start a Curl Diary and take pictures ![]()

I’m falling deeper in love with my gorgeous hair!
Only thing I can’t figure out is how u maintain your hair so you
Can have 2nd & 3rd day hair like I hear about coz at the moment
I’m doing a wash and go quite often!
@ princesspoet: Congrats on your BC!! woop woop!!! glad you are loving your hair! if your hair is long enough, you could put it in 2,3, or 4 loose ponies before you go to bed and (this is a must) sleep on a satin pillow case. When i wear a bonnet, it smooches my curls (so i only do that when i have cornrows in). in the morning, mist with some water and reapply a little bit of whatever products you used in your hair the day before (and make sure to seal in the moisture with a bit of oil after you’ve misted, unless the product you are using is already rich in oils). if your hair ia still a TWA, i’d just moisturise about an hour before bed (so it’s not damp when you do hit the sack) and sleep on a satin pillow case, you just have to refresh in the morning. Hope that helps?
Thanks for this article Keisha-Jo. Will come in useful when I take my braids out, I am using braids while I am transitioning.

Fabulous curls sleep on silk pillowcases. Wake up with happier curls!
Alex Kingston, WOW is what we say. She took our breath away in Moll Flanders! I think most British Curlies spent the time watching her curls in action. Seriously though Alex Kingston is a real Icon for staying true to her curls despite the pressures of fame and Hollywood.

wonderful article Keisha, really breaks it down for the new (and not-so-new) naturals who are daunted by the “task” they think caring for natural hair is! I love how simple it is really, and nice that you recommended some products, because lots of people like to know what they can try first.
