London Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers.  The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons).  LFW puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m;  the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE.

There are 50 or so catwalk shows on the official schedule as well as further 45+ show off schedule. The exhibition that runs alongside the catwalk shows showcases over 100 ready to wear and accessories designers each season.  LFW visitors have access to many more designers through presentations, multi-brand and individual showrooms.  In addition to the official and off schedule events LFW has become a focus for a broader base of fashion linked activities with international designers, media and other high profile brands choosing to host their own events during the weeks.  The BFC co-ordinate an events schedule to help visitors experience London ‘the city’ as well as the showcase of British fashion design talents at LFW.

One to watch is Caroline Charles, a London based designer who is simply fabulous! Check out her Spring 2010 Looks! Sneak peak here:

Also in 1993 the British Fashion Council created New Generation (NEWGEN), the world’s first scheme to support emerging designer talent.  NEWGEN continues to showcase and promote new designer businesses today.  NEWGEN is sponsored by Topshop who have been supporters since 2001.

Catwalk designers receive £5000 - £10000 towards their show costs, sponsored exhibition space, usage of the BFC Catwalk Show Space and mentoring.
Recognising the need for ongoing support, this scheme can be awarded to designers for up to four seasons.  Designers receive access to sales and marketing support and business advice in partnership with BFC supporters Shoosmiths, Baker Tilley and Lloyds TSB.

Since NEWGEN's inception, its roll call includes Alexander McQueen, Boudicca, Matthew Williamson, Julien Macdonald, Lara Bohinc and Ann-Louise Roswald and more recently Christopher Kane, Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll and Erdem. Full list of previous recipients.

Internationally recognised as a prestigious launch pad, this scheme is a showcase of the best up-and-coming British fashion talent. It also acts as an important introduction for young UK-based designers to influential press and buyers from around the world.

The scheme has become a key draw for the international fashion media and buyers attending London Fashion Week. NEWGEN designers are among the must-see collections on schedule every season.Watch what the buyers are saying this year!
