No Such Thing As Over Protected

by Belle British Curlies Contributor

However this constant love I have for my hair, all the loving touches take its toll and sometimes baby needs a rest from your mollycoddling.

Protective styling is my way of giving my hair a rest from…well me! our constant styling and manipulation (however little) can weaken our hair, creating weak points in our strands that lead to breakage.

At the moment I’m wearing my hair in Kinky twist’s using extensions, it’s not about achieving length but as my hair is in TWA stages it’s the easiest way for me to keep my coils tucked away.

Many people think a protective style is only braids or twists when in fact any style that is low manipulation, low maintenance and keeps the ends of your hair tucked away.

Here are a few stylish ways to protect your hair

Braids and twists (with extensions)

These can be with or without the use of extensions and are a style that you will get the most longevity out of.

If you opt for extensions avoid micro braids that can cause breakage, don’t use to much hair for the braid or twist this could pull your hair out from the root.

Also never braid to tightly this could result in traction alopecia.

Wash your hair regularly using a light shampoo that won’t create a build up, oil and condition your scalp with light oils such as lavender and jojoba oil.

For an on trend look try Box braids, the 90’s style is making a huge comeback.

Cornrows and goddess braids

Cornrows are often forgotten in the natural community, some people think the look can be dated.

However cornrows, are an easy, practical and stylish way to wear your natural hair

The goddess braid is often worn by actress Tracee Ellis Ross and most recently Fan Bing Bing at Cannes, the look is effortlessly chic and great for the summer.

The Loose bun

The loose bun is a staple if you have longer hair, always use covered hair bands and again never pull to tightly.

This is a very big catwalk look and looks great with natural hair as you can get a fuller bun.

Two strand Twist

Not just for your eventual twist out, try wearing your two strand twists pinned up in the loose bun.
