British Curlies - All About Naturally Beautiful Curls
Ayurvedic hair oils combine selected herbs such as gooseberry, henna and fenugreek with flowers such as false daisy, hibiscus and water hyssop in a base of sesame, mustard or coconut oil. Ayurvedic hair oils are not prepared for the purpose of having beautiful hair. Rather, they are ancient solutions to remedy common hair and scalp problems such as dandruff, hair loss and limp or brittle hair. Healthy hair is a sign of overall good health and vitality. Brands like Hairveda and Komaza Care follow these principles in developing their amazing products.

Plain coconut oil is also used in India to nourish the hair and scalp. Alternatively, sesame, olive and almond oils contain nutrients that help to maintain healthy hair. Oil can be applied at night before going to bed or first thing in the morning before shampooing. Let the oil remain on the hair for a few hours for best results.
A few important tips when using natural oils will optimize results.
Your hair can be completely dry before applying oil – this is known as Pre-Pooing your hair. Pre-pooing your hair with oils acts as a barrier to your hair so that when you do cleanse your hair you do not end up with stripped hair. You can choose to just use the oil of your choice as your Pre-Poo or mix your oil with some conditioner and apply. For a successful Pre-poo apply to dry hair and let it sit in your hair overnight or at least a few hours if you have very dry hair. If you have really thick hair section for even coverage.
Remember when shampooing focus on your scalp first using the pads of your finger in circular motions to help lift excess build-up from your hair.
You may also follow up your shampooing routine by applying oil after your leave-in conditioner to seal in the moisture in your hair.
At night you can also use oils as a scalp conditioner. To apply, rub a small portion in the palms of your hands to warm the oil and then work from the roots outward toward the hair ends. Nourishing the scalp and hair follicles helps to maintain the health of your curly hair.
Best to try one of these methods at a time to avoid greasy hair ![]()

My hair is both curly/wavy and dyed, so it has become really dry. I’ve been using oil on my hair for a while now and it has made a difference - didn’t know it was called pre-pooing. I first started with Moroccan oil but it is really expensive. I found some unbranded argan oil online(more than a fifth of the price) and have used this, it is too much for using after I have dried my hair but perfect for leaving in for a few hours or overnight prior to washing.

great article Keisha! i only adopted pre-pooing my hair about 8 months ago and i love the difference i saw and felt! coconut oil needs about 9 to 11 hours to fully penetrate the hair shaft, so it’s best applied the night before shampooing. I love hairveda Vatikia Frosting and of course Komaza is one of my top brands (especially the Intense Moisture Therapy DC, the best!!).
