Shea butter is a fat extracted from the nuts of a Shea African tree. The best form of shea butter to use is unrefined pure shea butter which is extracted and processed only with water. Raw shea butter can be white or a yellowish shade. Refined shea butter has been more processed but still contains the majority of beneficial ingredients. The kind most commonly found in large chain stores is processed shea butter, which is the diluted version and is typically a bright white colour. Shea butter is solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature. All shea butter varieties have benefits, but for best results for hair and skin, avoid processed shea butter.
Shea butter can be a godsend to anyone suffering with damaged, dry, or frizzy hair. Use a small dollop of shea butter, rub it between your hands, and focus attention to the ends of your dry hair, then run your hands through the entire length of your mane. The shea butter will smooth flyaway’s, add shine, and will act as a leave-in conditioner. For those with curly hair, use a small amount and work through the hair, then style as usual. The shea butter will help define your curls while minimizing frizz. When used with bendy rods or simple two-strand twists, shea butter produces glossy supermodel waves or curls while conditioning your hair. Shea butter produces an incredible hair mask when mixed with a small amount of coconut oil and essential oils.
Shea butter is also helpful for a variety of skin problems. For those who spent too much time in the sun, shea butter can sooth sun burns and helps the skin repair itself. Due to its high levels of vitamin content, shea butter helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Shea butter also provides a luxurious moisturizing treatment that you can do at home to feel truly spoiled. Take a large scoop of shea butter and melt it gradually in a microwave or over the stove. Be careful to not let it boil or bubble; just melt it enough so that it is easily stirred. Once it’s warm enough, add a few drops of your favourite scented oil, like vanilla or lavender. Stir until the scent is thoroughly mixed in, and then place the mixture in the fridge to cool. After 15 minutes or until it has begun to solidify again, smooth over the skin for ridiculously silky and fragrant skin.

Interesting article. Shea butter sounds like a great multi-tasker for hair and skin.
i like the texture and effects of shea butter on my hair and skin, but i DO NOT like the smell of raw unrefined shea butter, i have never liked it (i am originally from Cameroon and we make it there traditionally), so i now prefer to use refined shea butter, and i have to say my hair or skin have not complained! i use it in my mixes with other butters (mango, murumuru, capuacu, coffee, avocado, etc ... and coconut oil, the best oil for our hair i believe!!). Yep i have tried mixing in some EOs and fragranced oils to mask the woody nutty smokey smell, but to no avail!
Great tips. I just ordered the unrefined shea butter today. I am excited to start using it for my hair.I am hoping to achieve some great changes in my hair in the next few months.
Yes I did do a mix similar with unrifined she’s butter from Ghana. This has saved my hair this winter, no dryness now.. It my winter staple. The smell is hard to mask even with essential oils..
Thanks for reminding me about my she’s mix.. It’s saved my hair again!.

Your stylist should avoid being too accurate when cutting, each curl needs to be assessed and cut independently to achieve a natural look.

Great post…the merits of Shea butter are fantastic especially now that its getting colder, it moisturises effortlessly and a little goes a long way. For me, it’s a staple in my house
