Choosing to be natural can be daunting at first. You'll find that many of your fears and doubts will stem from your lack of knowledge on how to properly care for natural hair. Just be patient and willing to learn from others. Remember you are not alone. So enjoy the ride ![]()
There are only (2) ways to go natural.
1. You can cut off all of the relaxed ends of your hair. Better known throughout online forums as "The Big Chop".
2. You can allow the relaxer to grow out until your natural hair has achieved the length you desire. This method allows you to just trim the relaxed ends as your natural hair grows.
Keep in mind that you will now have to learn to care for your hair in it's natural state. So take your time so you can be open to experimenting with various styling options and hair products that will work for your new hair type.
Working with your natural curls may seem challenging at first. But you will eventually learn to love your curls once you have found the hair care regimen that works for you. Your biggest challenge will be finding ways to make your hair more manageable (i.e. easier to comb and maintain).
• When combing or detangling your hair, always comb from the ends to the root using a wide tooth comb.
• Natural hair is easier to comb while wet! Many naturals can attest to this.
• Provide your hair with adequate moisture to prevent drying and breakage. Moisture is a MUST!
• Regular conditioning is also a MUST. It will become a very important part of your natural hair care routine.
• Keep heat to a minimum. If you must use heat, please invest in a good heat protectant. Keep in mind that heat (like chemicals) can alter and damage your natural hair texture.
Be creative!!! You are only limited by your imagination. So don't be afraid to try various styles and accessories to find what works for you.
• A wide tooth comb.
• H20 - Yes, lots and lots of agua. Natural hair thrives on water.
• A good detangler.
• A good hair softening cream.
• A very good moisturizer.
• A very, very good shampoo & conditioner
• A daily leave-in conditioner.
• Scarves, headbands, clips and other accessories to experiment with various hairstyles.

As a type 4 curly, this information is really good for newbie’s! Just to add my two pennies - I would say that you need to see what works for you and what works for one type 4 head of hair, may not work for you! Its all about learning to adapt. For example, it is much easier for me to detangle my hair dry, with product in it, than when it is wet! But for a lot of other naturals, it is much easier to do it wet! Great article though!
Also, there are a lot of hard water areas in england, so constantly applying water can make type 4 hair, hard and matted, (I know from experience!)
I have to agree with LELA7… When I went natural, I found I had to experiment with various products until I found what worked the best.. Bearing in mind, your hair can love a prodcut one minute and then hate it the next… I’m currently using Miss Jessies Buttercreme and Curly Pudding which my hair seems to love….
As a newbie I really appreciate this article. I’m still in transition and am yet to find the products that will work for me as I’m still using products for relaxed hair. Each time I wash my hair it becomes more difficult to stick with the decision so go natural. Thanks for the article.
I do like this article who help african/african descent women to know how go natural and how to take care this fragile hair.

Great curls love a good leave-in conditioner.
Alex Kingston, WOW is what we say. She took our breath away in Moll Flanders! I think most British Curlies spent the time watching her curls in action. Seriously though Alex Kingston is a real Icon for staying true to her curls despite the pressures of fame and Hollywood.
