British Curlies - All About Naturally Beautiful Curls
Type 4 hair has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type which means it has less natural protection from the damage you inflict by combing, brushing, curling, blow drying and straightening it.
The more cuticle layers in a single strand the more protection it has from damage. Each time you damage your hair-fire up the flat irons, fry it with chemicals- you break down a cuticle layer robbing your hair of much needed moisture. I cannot empathize this enough. It is like taking a wire and bending it again and again. Eventually it is going to snap and break. Many women with type 4 hair rely on chemical relaxers to make hair easier to control. In its natural state, sometimes Type 4 hair doesn’t grow very long because every time you comb it, it breaks.
There are two subtypes of Type 4 hair: Type 4A, tightly coiled hair that when stretched has an “S” pattern, much like curly hair; and Type 4B, which has a “Z” pattern, less of a defined curl pattern instead of curling or coiling the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter “Z”.

Type 4A tends to have more moisture than Type B, which will have a wiry texture. But what if your hair has been chemically straightened? How can you tell which subtype you belong to if your hair is relaxed? You’ll need at least one inch of new growth to tell. Pull at the roots. If you can see a definite curl pattern, then it’s an A, if not, then it’s a B.
NaturallyCurly.com type 4 readers have found the above description limiting, and somewhat misleading. They offer the following addendum:
Type 4 hair can range from fine/thin to wiry/coarse strand texture. Generally, this hair is densely packed to give the appearance of very thick but fragile hair. 4a hair has a clearly visible curl and wave pattern that ranges from pen size curls to pen spring size coils. 4b hair has a tighter wave pattern and kinks of various size. This texture does not exhibit the shine or silkiness of looser type curls, but instead has sheen, and a soft, almost cotton-like feel. As with other types of curly hair, showing the true length can be an extra challenge, as the hair may grow “up” or “out” before starting to hang down. In its unlocked/unbraided state, type 4 hair is known to shrink up to 75% of the actual hair length. With the proper care and technique, type 4 hair is indeed resilient, manageable, durable, growable and easy to control.
Type 4 hair loves butters, oils and cremes. Here are a few products you may consider trying on your beautiful coils and curls.
Darcy's Botanicals Madagascar Vanilla Styling Creme
Darcy's Botanicals Avocado and Honey Twisting Creme
Crown Pride Shea and Hemp Whipped Butter
Crown Pride Painya Hair Butter
Miss Jessies Curly Buttercreme

This section on Type 4 as is the sections on Type 3 and Type 2 are from a hair classification system developed by Andre Walker. The site could not alter his content as it is taken directly from his book. We love Type 4 CURLS they are soft, beautiful and diverse and Curlies with Type 4 Curls look amazing as Nathalie and Shingai illustrate
Im happy there is UK one too! Its great! I hope you get more curly products in to buy! Like the Kinky-Curly line I would like to try it! ![]()
Does anyone know what the best curl defining product like for type 4a hair is? Id like to try the mixed chicks line but not sure if it would be worth the money and define and moisturise my hair (bored of twist outs).
Curliek,
I am told fantasia IC gel with sparklelites is good at defining. Some also swear by aloe vera gel - though I suspect this may be too drying if used alone. For myself - not a fan of wash and go’s due to excess shrinkage and potential for tangling. I LOVE twistouts and find that twisting my hair with Oyin handmade shine and define mixed with a dab of coconut oil gives me soft, defined twistouts which last for days.

Hope I did not come across as overly critical, LOL! Truth is - I have a problem with Andre’s classification system.
And I agree - those two ladies have gorgeous hair!
Glad I finally can see a website devoted to UK curlies like myself!
I must admit that the hair typing by Andre has sort of thrown me a little as my hair has a tendency to be a cross between 4a, 4, 3 only when wet and 4b.
Either way I love my curly, wurly, napptural hair because it has it’s own attitude and character.
Once again THANK YOU for creating this website.
I will make time (in between mixing) to become a permanent resident.
All the best
Anita
Hey AnitaG,
Great to have you.It is absolutley true what you say about your curls Andre does say that you can actually have more than 1 Curl Type on any head. Lots of Curlies are a mix of Curl Types. Some are 3C and 4A others 2C with 3B. The combinations are endless which is all part of the fun of having Curly hair
Enjoy the site it has been a labour of love and I want every Curlie to be happy here. We can work on adding our own comments to Andre’s on Type 4 Curls. All suggestions are welcomed. Send your thoughts on how to improve this description to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Wow, at last!!!!
But i notice something “strange” a lot of curly website talk about 4C but here it doesn’t exist.
Vive (french) les curly girls
Hi Coilygirl
Welcome to British Curlies. Andre Walker’s hair classification does not have a 4C which is why it is not included here. We used his hair classification system faithfully unlike other sites who have created this additional hair type. If you would like to provide us with a 4C description I would be delighted to include it here.
Thank you Keisha Jo to answer me.
I have very small curls more look like coils.
I love this website !!! I am very excited with it !!!
my hair type is 3c/4a and i love it! however, i would like recommendations for leave in detangling conditioner other than kinky curly as my little girl has 4b/c lovely hair but tangles more than mine does and the key to keeping growth is minimal breakage! ![]()
im glad more women (those of colour) are embracing their hair in their natural state there is nothin to be ashamed of. going back to natural is the BEST beauty decision i have ever made, would never turn back to relaxer, my hair is so easy to mangage and soft i never needed it in the first place!!!!!
bless x x

I am so thrilled to finally see a website that caters to UK curlies! There are so many American ones which are great and have been immensely useful BUT having one right on your doorstep (so to speak) with hopefully helpful recommendations on suitable, locally available products/stylists, etc is simply fab! I do worry that it will be geared towards those with looser curls though with no real in-depth info or tips for 4b’s and above. For instance - if you read the commentary on curl types - type 2 and 3 have a complimentary word mentioned at least once eg “beautiful” yet if you read the type 4 blurb - nothing really positive or complimentary is mentioned. Just stuff like - “it will snap and break, it is fragile etc. It gives off a subliminal message that this curl type is the least desired. It may be hard for an impressionable 4b girl looking into going natural to take away any kind of encouraging message after reading that. I do hope I am reading too much into this though. It would be sad if 4’s especially 4b and above are sidelined or given a token nod. Anyway, look forward to enjoying this new site!
