As some of you know - I have been looking into oils and hair colour and I promised to report anything I found. I started looking into this as I had heard that some oils fade chemical hair colour. I still haven’t found anything conclusive on that but I did find out something about coconut oil!

I found a fascinating thread on the long hair community about minimising chemical colour damage to hair! It has taken me a long time to read it all through - the thread is 116 pages to date!

Basically - a member of the site has been doing some research on pre-treating hair with virgin coconut oil prior to chemical colour and the results have been amazing. Coconut oil is unique in that it is absorbed into the hair (argan oil also absorbs a little too). The thread goes into the science behind why coconut oil (and also argan oil) can help prevent damage so I won’t repeat it here.

Now, the research isn’t controlled like it would be in a ‘true’ experiment but the members who have been using coconut oil (and coconut and argan oil) before colour application have reported great results - and that sounds pretty good to me!

Here is the thread, it is definitely worth a look for anyone who colours their hair:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=10495

I have just posted my first post up on the site - as I plan to try it for myself in a couple of weeks and wanted my findings to be included in Ktani’s research. My biggest fear was that oiling the hair before colour would affect colour uptake and I NEED my greys to be covered LOL (I was more concerned about that than the damage!) but no one has reported it affecting dye uptake. It has got be worth a go!

I hope you guys find it interesting! I will of course post a full report here when I’ve tried it.

I’ve read that some Curlies do a bit of preventative work before their hair is coloured. I’m booked in for my half head of highlights and semi permanent colour next Friday, and am wondering if there is anything I can do to prepare my hair and minimise the risk of damage. Also, any aftercare? I don’t want to do anything that might prevent the colour from taking, mind you. Any tips gratefully received!

my hair is very coarse (type 3a-3b and 3c in the crown) ...black.. hates protein .. wiry ..

they say hair dyes breaks the protein of the hair.. So, well this helps my hair in minimizing its protein?
I’ve never used hair dyes before… do u think it will make my hair worse?
is Henna healthy for coarse hair? do u recommend a good henna? i prefer the creamy ones .. I read about Surya in the internet..

I have never coloured my hair myself before and was thinking about giving it a go. I only ever have semi permanant colour put on at the hairdressers, my hair is brown and I occasionaly geti it coloured to cover those odd grey hairs and get an over all shiney effect.
I was looking to do it myself due to cost and hopefully find a more organic/CG method to colour. I am also avoiding my hairdresser for a few months whilst I try and growth spurt my hair.

So me question is what is the best way to colour your hair yourself. I’ve heard of Henna - but does this turm your hair red?
Also has anybody tried the Lush products?

Hi everyone

I had noticed Balayage (painting natural looking highlights free hand onto specific pieces of hair ) on various celebs (Jessica Biel springs to mind) and had always wondered if it would work on curls. I read the great article on the site about Balayage and that recommends it as a way to make curls pop.

I’ve nearly grown out all of my hair dye (yay!!) and am dabbling with the idea of getting something subtle.

Has anyone tried this on their hair? Would be great to find out what you think and maybe see some pics.

Hello everyone! Hope you are all well!

Well i am debating about going back blonde, my hair has been dark (brown or red) for about 2 years now. I am wondering what i would need to do? My hair is quite a dark red just now and would like to get it back to quite a light blonde. I realise i wont be able to do this after the first colour session. However, i want to make sure that my hair is protected and i dont lose the condition.

Any hints/tips?

Hi all,

I have black hair and have been wanting to go blonde-ish for years. Think Rita Ora/Beyonce/Leona Lewis esque. I am definitely going to go to a hair salon and may even ask for some sort of balayage look to bring out my curls. Maybe.

My question is how do i prep my hair before? And what can I do to enhance my colour and protect my curls when it’s actually dyed?

I don’t think they’ll use peroxide (I don’t want to go platinum blonde),as my friend who has a similar hair colour to mine said they just reeeeally lightened her hair before putting her desired blondey/browny shade on top.

Any tips and advice welcome (except don’t do it - I’m definitely doing it, even for a short period of time!) I am aware my hair is going to get drier, but I believe CGs have the right to dye just as straightys do! :p
