I have been growing my curly hair since having a disastrous cut at a hairdressers 3 years ago where i ended up with short hair!!! it was so bad i had to straighten it every day and it was still tooo short, plus my hair would keep curling and never stay straight. Its now growing but has been over 6 months since Ive had it cut as im scared what a hairdresser might do by chopping too much hair off as its much longer wet! HELP!!!!

I would like to be considered for the prize, I have a mixture of type 3a/3b hair which is medium brown.

In the recent years I have sported a short, straight and asymmetric haircut for which I had to flat iron, backcomb and generally brutalise my hair into submission daily. My outward persona, characterised by my high maintanace haircut, was typical ‘hipster city girl’. In all honesty I had never felt comfortable with the look - I decided to grow out the short hairstyle and try for a softer natural look, more inkeeping with my personality. The change in my personal style was a natural progression thereafter. My clothing and makeup evolved along with my hair.

I tried to keep the new growth as natural as possible, applying heat treatments sparingly and leaving it’s natural colour (except for on one occasion when I decided to dye it dark brown and ended up dying it the same colour). I found this website and with it new ways to improve my natural curl – discarding traditional towel drying in favour of plopping and diffusing upside down. I will be starting a CG routine as of June.

Why do I deserve this hair cut? I’m not entirely sure I do. I do desperately need advice on a cut, however. I have front sections of hair which are the remnants of a fringe, which I can do nothing with. The rest of my hair is shapeless. I have literally no ideas as to where to go from now, with my cut. Getting a haircut and advice from a professional of Carlos Flores calibre would be invaluable.

Thank you for reading, Emma.

[Edited because the first post was far too self indulgent]

I have always been a bit distrustful of hairdressers ever since I was about 12 years old and my Dad took me into a new salon, asked them to cut and dry my hair and left me in their capable hands. When he came back to collect me, he was horrified to see what they’d done to me. My hair all over the place and frizz was settling in so needless to say he didn’t pay them and took me straight home so that my mother could do some damage control. For this reason, I only go to the hairdresser when I go home (South Africa) and at best that’s once a year. I’ve been going to the same hairdresser since I was 20 (I’m 34 now) and give her sufficient notice once I’ve booked my ticket.

That was the first bad experience, there have been others and this is also the reason why I used henna to colour my hair…the thought of placing my hair in the hands of someone else is a little scary.

This is why I’d love the opportunity to win a hair cut from the curl genius himself. Who better to put my trust in? With my wedding coming up in 74 days (31 July is the big day), I’ve been researching different salons and stylists (which is how I found the British Curlies site) to find someone to cut my hair - the ends are a bit dry and there’s no shape as my last haircut was in Feb 2009 (our last trip to SA). In fact, I’ve had recommendations from a few people but they don’t have curly hair and so didn’t understand why I’m so reluctant to just walk into a salon and get my hair cut. I guess it’s even more of an issue because of the wedding and I don’t want to be a bride with misshapen hair - and I want to show off my curls on my big day grin

This is really a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Attached is a pic showing what my hair looked like last week (taken 11 and 14 May).

Thanks for your time Ladies.

Hi there!

I only realised I was a curly girl by the time I was 21! Sounds crazy, but all through my younger days I had blow-dried straight, straightened, or pulled back tight in an attempt to get my poor hair as flat as possible to fit in with the rest of my family.  One day, after leaving my hair to dry naturally I discovered I had more curls than I’d ever imagined and since then I feel like I’ve been playing catch up to learn how to make the best of what comes naturally!

My last hair disaster was going to a new hairdresser and asking them to add some shorter layers in order to give me more volume and shape around my face.  The girl gave me one layer. One layer bluntly cut all the way around my head! In other words, she’d given me a bowl-cut!! And the rest of my poor locks were left limply hanging underneath. I looked like I had some strange cross between a bowl-cut and a mullet, neither of which are hairstyles I ever hoped to have!

Since then I’ve been desperately trying to grow out the bowl cut whilst attempting to blend in the mullet.  Its been a long and fraught process, and now that all lengths and layers are in reasonable shape, I would love for Carlos Flores to turn it back into the curly wonderfulness I’ve always dreamed it could be!
