Hi there,

Been no poo for 6/7 weeks with good results initially but did semi permanent colour a week ago and hair is awful! Feels really dry and frizzes easily. Want to try a home protein treatment (egg & olive oil - no mayo in the house) but worried in case my hair doesnt like it.

Have Type 2 wavy shoulder length hair that is v fine and frizz prone. Been co washing with Dr Organics conditioner only and using gel to stop frizz but not sure if the gel (VO5) is making it worse. Also think hair is very porous as it wets really easily and without gel can be dry in 1/2 hr.  If I load on the gel it can take 6 hours to dry. Totally confused! How can I tell if hair is over conditioned or over proteined? Did have good results last year when I tried Ojon but want to find cheaper ways to make the best of my hair. Feel like my hair is a curse - all frizz and no curl - help!

All advice gratefully received.

Thanks ladies

I’m not yet sure of the whole protein thing, but I know gel can be drying for some. If you’re getting a lot of frizz (believe me, I’ve been there!) I’d try upping the moisture level of your hair before worrying about protein treatments. I find that I need a some conditioner under gel when I use it. Are you using a leave-in before styling?

It doesn’t have to be specialist, just something not too heavy that will distribute easily. You could try the Dr Organics you’ve already got. I use that for co-washing, but don’t see why it couldn’t be used as a leave-in too. I’m still failry new to all this, but if you’re getting a lot of frizz, I’d try upping the moisture levels first with some condish..

Thanks Nellie, will try that first - havent been using a leave in. Don’t think I’d need to use much but will have to experiment.

hi mrst - if your hair is fine the chances are it will like protein.  If you are over-proteined your hair will feel almost straw like.  If over conditioned it will be dull/lank/lifeless.  If you are worried, first time you use the egg/olive oil just leave on for maybe 10 mins.  After it, you may have to condition as your hair may feel a bit dry - this is normal so don’t worry about it.  (sometimes this doesn’t happen).  As nellie says, you could try upping your moisture level first to see if that will help with dryness/frizziness too as it could be you are needing some more moisture.

I mixed an egg with a banana (instead of mayo), oil and honey last week. Smelt slightly better, was more moisurising…BUT I should’ve use a food processor as I really struggled to get out all the little banana chunks. And foods stuck in your hair isn’t really a good look lol.

I would say definitely use a leave-in under your gel, just your normal co-wash conditioner should be ok for that. smile

Thank you girls, will give this a try.

Co washed today and left small amount of conditioner in before using gel and hair does feel a bit better. Checked out the thread and my hair dry does have almost no stretch in it but I still think protein might help - will leave for just 10 mins as suggested. Hair is very soft - but very dry. Many thanks.

Hi - have a go with the protein no harm in trying!  Just be cautious first time you do it.  smile
