What does everyone do with their hair when they’ve got an ultra-dry plane trip to deal with?  Any tips?

I tried leaving a LOT of leave in in and using protective styling, but the plane got the better of me in the end, and I ended up really dried out for a while.  I feel like maybe you need to create some sort of sturdy seal on the cuticle, but I’m not entirely sure how that could be done without resorting to cones.  Anyone have any ideas?

I don’t intend to fly in the next few months but I thought this might be a handy forum to have before holiday-season really kicks in.

I’m only guessing here but how about using the co-wash conditioner and not rinsing it out….in the loo before you get on plane. wrap hair in a bun or/and a scarf to disguise the fat that you are walking around with white conditioner in your hair. Take an empty spray bottle and Lush snake oil bar in you carry on and either buy airside or ask air steward for mineral water. Spray hair with water every hour or so (in your seat or in the loo) and rub the snake oil on any really dry bits. Worth a try.

When I flew this past May, I made sure my hair was completely dry (that is, not wet) before getting on the plane.  I did a DT with a product without any aloe/glycerin/etc in it (Jessicurl WDT) the night before, and just left my hair in a braid for the 36-odd hours I was travelling.  I did another DT when I arrived at my destination, and my hair was fine.  I did this on the way back and it worked perfectly that time as well.

I think the secret is to make sure your hair is sealed and not remotely wet when on the plane - the dry air will leech the moisture out of your hair, and so you want to make that as difficult as possible (I know leaving it wet in any way will actually make this worse from past experience).  Moisture moisture moisture + sealing = happy airplane hair.
