Hi all,

I recently visited a stylist in Birmingham called Matthew James.

He’s had some glowing reviews on another curly hair website http://www.naturallycurly.com/
So I thought I’d give him a go. He’s lovely. Matthew is the first stylist I’ve ever had that before cutting or shampooing my hair, has sat me down and talked to me face to face and listened to me. What my problems have been in the past, what look I want to achieve, if its possible etc.

from the very start he put me at ease as like many women on this site I’ve has some disasters. Matthew knows exactly how to cut curly hair. Mines wonderful, full of bounce and shape, I’ve now found a hairdresser I will be going back to again. This is his website http://www.matthewjameshair.com

Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

I had my haircut at Matthew James yesterday and well what can I say, he is just fab!! Like the other posters have commented, the first thing he did was to ask me all about my hair, what it likes and doesn’t like, what I wanted it to look like, etc; he spent a good while listening to me explain about my hair disasters and protein problems lol!! He was actually interested in hearing all about it, then gave me his ideas and suggestions of how he wanted to cut my hair. I told him to just do what he thought best, as he sounded like he knew his stuff! And I’m so glad I did, my hair looks amazing! The shape is perfect, it’s just what I wanted; my hair is sooo ringlety and falls just right grin  I never knew the right cut could make such a difference!! It actually feels really different on my head, hence me walking around like a crazy person shaking my head from side to side all day long after I left the salon lol. And also Matt is really friendly and funny, i was totally dreading going to a salon again after years of avoiding it but he really put me at ease.

Also one thing that really stood out for me was when he commented that my hair was really really curly, and said it like a compliment grin soooooo different from every other hairdresser I’ve ever been to who all made it sound like a complaint and as if they felt sorry for me having curly hair!

Will definitely be going back and highly recommend him!!

I have wavy hair rather than curly hair and also have a huge problem finding a hairdresser that understands my requirements.  I would definitely recommend Matt at Matthew James in Birmingham who expertly deals with all types of hair.  I visited him based on the recommendations on this website and also another called http://www.naturallycurly.com/ and can certainly back up all the good things that were said!  Matt spends valuable time beforehand sitting down with you to talk about the look you want and more importantly the look you don’t want! This is sometimes overlooked by some of the salons that rush you out their doors.  He also makes an effort to make you feel comfortable and make a trip to the hairdressers relaxing and enjoyable – as it should be! I was very happy with my cut and have already been singing his praises to my friends to go and pay a visit! His website is http://www.matthewjameshair.com what are you waiting for??! smile

WOW! I wish I saw this before I got my hair cut last week (not that it was a bad cut but I ad to get it done while it was straight). I’m just going to let my hair grow for a couple of months then hopefully visit him during the summer, maybe July if I can hold out that long. Looking forward to it. It’s brilliant to finally hear of someone experinced within driving distance!!!

Again, I would recommend Matthew James in Birmingham!

I live in Glasgow, but visited my family in Brum for Easter. I found some good reviews about how Matthew treats curly heads and thought I would check him out. Having found no-one in Glasgow or Edinburgh to deal my with my very tightly curly, almost afro mixed race hair, I was at a loose end!

I found his service to be lovely. Had a thorough chat with a cuppa beforehand to decide on what I wanted and I showed him some pictures I’d found of the style i was after, which he wasn’t dismissive about as some hairdressers are. With the cut itself, he didn’t rush…and I was getting A LOT of hair cut off (about 4-5 inches i reckon). My hair went a bit after being handled so much, but after a day or two, it settled into it’s style and it’s super cute.

Hi,
I recently went to Matthew James Hair in Birmingham (New Street) and was delighted with the results!
I’m new to the site so I’m not really sure what type my hair is but it is quite curly. Judging by everyones pics though I’d say it was 3bish. Despite this, Matthew was able to give me a fantastic cut! He gave my hair shape by adding layers, without making it look bushy. Most hairdressers I’ve been to just cut my hair straight across which makes it look triangualr as they don’t really understand my curls but Matt new exactly what he was talking about. He didn’t just cut my hair either: he gave me loads of really good styling tips so I can get the same results at home that he gave me got at the salon, and said I could pop in the salon or email him anytime for advice or help. Also he didn’t try and make me buy any really expensive hair products from the salon. Instead he told me what products I could buy for a fraction of the price at any highstreet store that do exactly the same job. And for a high-end brilliantly trained stylist he didn’t charge ridiculously either. Infact at £40 for a wash, complete re-style, blow dry and finish I was really impressed!
I would recommend him to anyone smile
Heres his site

Hope this helps smile

Since having my hair cut at Matthew James a couple of months ago I’ve worn it straight a couple of times, so thought I’d give an update on how my curly cut looked straightened… it was fantastic! I didn’t think that a curly cut could look that good on straight hair, but I’ve totally been proved wrong; the layers look fab and it doen’t look weird or uneven at all!! No idea how Matt managed that, just goes to show how good he really is!! I’ll post some piccies at some point! :-D

Finally saw Matt today (I didn’t quite make it to holding until July) and it was lovely.

He was understanding and really patient with me while I attempted to explain what I want (I’m not the most eloquent or talkative of people rolleyes and even I didn’t know what I really wanted, being immensely tired didn’t help much either…) but he was very helpful and friendly.

He used the kinky curly range and said that he was about to begin stocking and selling it too, so for any kinky curly users that’s brilliant news (I’m still not certain about them).

It was brilliant to have someone who actually knows what they’re talking about (and doesn’t pretend to do so to make money (ahem) M&M in Leicester). He used the Lorraine Massey technique of cutting (exactly what I needed) and talked about the CG method too - again great!

I’m yet to style properly so not completly certain about the result (see my diary) but I do know that currently it’s sitting, and the curls are fitting in with each other a lot better; a lot more uniform. It shows that when curly hair is cut the way it’s supposed to be it will make a difference!

He was also a lovely guy and I will go and see him again (when I actually have some energy and don’t nearly fall asleep in the chair) and definetly think anyone in West Midlands should go see him. Even East Midlands really, it took me 50ish minutes on train (then what would have been a 5 minute walk if I knew where it was) and it is worth it.

I may have just found my hairdresser for life!
