I thought this would be a helpful thread for newbies to determine their hairs Texture and Porosity. Here are the links CrystalTips kindly posted for me in another thread.

For some reason, the full link here doesn’t work.. so click on the above link and then select ‘curly hair basics’ from the left hand panel. Info about texture and porosity.

Hi, Thanks for this information ive never thought about this stuff before!...it sounds like my hair has lots of porosity so it looks like I will need to find a protein treatment for my hair thats not drying,I was kinda scared to use them as I heard people say it drys their hair out and mine is already really dry and brittle and frizzy and I don’t want to use protein and end up with it worse!

Maybe a once a week treatment will be a good idea?

Oh thanks for the links Curlymama, useful reading!
And yes determining your hairs texture and porosity is really important in figuring out how to best care for your hair.

Also most hair needs SOME protein. Highly porous and fine hair tends to need more. The only time when you may need to avoid protein is if your hair is very COARSE . Coarse hair typically naturally contains more protein and using too much protein can overload it causing it to become dry and straw like. This however is only the case for coarse hair, and most hair does well with protein. When usewd with a good moisturising conditioner you shouldnt have any problems with dryness when using protein, and in fact itmay help your hair to become more able tohang on to moisture. grin

I’m gonna try the hair in water test,I still find it hard to work out when I read about porosity, some things seem to contradict others. One I may find correct and then I read something that is the opposite for me!
