Hi Ladies,

I have realised that my hair does not like Shea butter, coconut oil, and glycerin (during the winter months, during the summer months I think my hair will like glycerin). So I am on the hunt for products that do not contain these ingredients, it is actually proving to be quite difficult does any one have any suggestions? smile

Thanks

In what kind of product? Leave-ins, moisturisers, stylers etc.
p.s. Have you tried East African shea butter as well? I find that Nilotica is often more agreeable.

I would like sugguestions for a leave in, moisturisers and conditioners, I have not thought about trying different types of shea butters I guess I just ruled them all out,  however I have tried a sample of the Crown Pride Nilotica and Manketti buttercream and didn’t really find it that moisturising it had the same drying affect that I usually get from shea butter. I also tried mixing shea butter with different oils or hair moisturisers and no avail.

Going from things I’ve tried (available in the Curly Emporium) and liked:
Crown Pride Hair milk (leave -in)
Curl Junkie Smoothing lotion (leave-in)
Darcy’s Botanicals Daily Leave-In Conditioner
Natural Coils Daily Leave-In Spray
MyHoneyChild Aloe Vera Leave-In Treatment Conditioner

Crown Pride Avocado Detangling Conditioner (rinse out)
CURLS Hair Tea Conditioner (rinse out)

I’m pretty sure I’ve missed a lot (my hair LOVE coconut oil) but you can have a scan through yourself. Coconut oil will often be called ‘Cocos nucifera’ and Shea butter: ‘Butyrospermum parkii’, ‘Vitellaria paradoxa’ or ‘karité’. Hope that helps!

East African shea butter is a lot softer, but it doesn’t seem to be as easy to find as West African. It usually originates from Tanzania and Uganda.

How did you use the shea butter/coconut oil? A lot of blogs are misleading when they say these two are moisturising on their own. At first, I tried to use them by themselves on my hair and it just didn’t work, but now if I use them whipped on my ends, with wet hair, it usually turns out quite nice.

@ Efuru

Thanks for the sugguestions will definitely look into them hopefully something will work, I tried a sample of the Crown pride condish which my hair loved so will be purchasing the full size of that. I may also look into trying different types of shea butter and see what results I get. Coconut oil is a definite no no though I really wanted to love it but my hair just wasn’t having any of it lol.

I have tried both on wet and dry hair, coconut oil leaves my hair feeling hard when appiled to wet hair, on dry hair it feels dry and brittle doesnt really work well as a sealant for me. On wet and dry hair Shea butter feels moisturising and leaves my hair feeling soft, but then after an hour or so my hair just feels dry and brittle again, I have also found that products which contain large amounts of shea butter and coconut oil really don’t work well I noticed this with the Hairveda line. I have really fussy hair lol smile

i agree with Efuru, East African Shea Butter may have a different effect on your hair. I always thought my hair simply doesn’t like shea butter, having tried shea from Cameroon, Ghana, Burkina Fasco and Nigeria, with no success.
My hair does really well with nilotica shea though, so i am sticking with that (and i love the Crown Pride Naturals Nilotica and Manketti Buttercream).
I don’t know what to suggest for coconut oil as my hair loves it (mainly as a prepoo in cold months and sealant in warm months). Maybe give olive oil a try, i hear it does wonders, but i can’t stand the smell in my hair! smile

Thanks for the tips ladies much appreciated smile I think I will give the CP buttercream another try, if I still get the same results then I will just give up on Shea butter. I am hoping to try the Qhemet biologics line once Adornment stocks up, I have heard good things about there hair moisturisers and I don’t think they contain shea butter or coconut not 100% sure, so maybe this could be another option.

Hello,
I know this is really late, but I just found this thread. My hair has exactly the same problems as yours, both shea and coconut oil. Since I am in the 4s, there are almost no products without one or the other. My hair does love coconut milk products, but that’s about it!

I haven’t used shampoo or conditioner in a few months, but Aubrey Organics was good for a rinse out, waiting to try the KBB luscious locks, but I currently use rhassoul clay to wash and condition.

I seal with Cacao butter instead. It’s my alternative. The one product with shea that I love is the (evelyn products) Fro Avocado and Mango Melody, it does have shea, but it works amazingly! Curls Whipped Cream is also one of my staples, over the Qhemet products.

How did the Crown Pride workout?

Please try a simple mix of aloe Vera gel and castor oil.

My hair is fussy about Shea in the winter months.. Erratic with glycerin and can’t stand coconut oil.
Castor oil n aloe Vera gel are yet to fail me in any season.

Hey, I didn’t really find the buttercreme that moisturising my hair felt dry again after a couple hours, however I still use Crown Pride hair milk and Avocado condish. Curl Junkie products have become my staple even though many of there products contain Shea butter and coconut oil my hair doesn’t seem to mind lol so I guess its just a case of trial and error . smile
