Hey!

I’m not sure if anyone’s posted this already - I’m feeling too lazy to read the whole thread! lol - BUT, Aveda in Covent Garden (London) have a really, really good curly hair specialist called Joon. She’s trained specifically, and knows alot about all typs of curly hair. I had a bad experience at Adornment 365, because I assumed that a black hair salon would understand CURLY hair - but this was not the case! And I ended up with frizzy, poofy hair, that was supposed to be trimmed, but ended up blatantly longer on one side, than the other!! Not a good look! lol

After booking with Aveda, I found that not only do you get the benefit of good quality natural products at Aveda, but Joon offers a free consultation too! I’m student too, but out of desperation, I spent quite abit, but to be honest, the results were worth it

When I was there last, a treatment, with th free consultation consultation was about £30!
Honestly, she was reall informative, knowing alot about curly hair in general!

A quick head’s up though, Aveda are a bit weird when it comes to pricing, so they offer the opportunity for Joon to price upon consultation of your hair, which means it can be greatly reduced!

Hope this helps!! xx

I haven’t heard any other reviews about the Aveda salon but I’m very tempted to try it.

Last month, I went for my first trim since my BC. I decided to have it straightened before it was trimmed because I was afraid the stylist would cut too much.  Anyway, when I started wearing it curly as usual, the shape of my new cut looked a bit strange and think this may be because it was trimmed when straight.
Although I have read about some curlies who trim this way and it works well for them.

So I’m thinking of giving Joon at Aveda a go, next time. Has anyone else tried them?

Curly Lox - 02 December 2009 10:36 PM

Ok, just for you CrystalTips (I used to get called that as well, I remember the cartoon - except my hair isn’t purple!)

Unruly - Hairdresser (Michael) Portobello Road, London

Basically I was hunting on the internet a few years ago and came across Michael as apparently he seemed to be a God when it came to curly hair - so I thought I’d give him a go.  He never really discussed ways to look after my hair, cut it wet (I think he may have used Tigi curls rock to style (it was quite a few years back now!). The only thing he did different was dry my hair lying down (yes…really!). He laid the chair out flat and dried it with a difusser, can’t really see any difference with that than compared to me flipping forward. A standard cut really, so nothing impressive - I think it was around £50/£60.

ID - Hairdresser (Kelly) Shoreditch, London

Kelly has curly hair herself, so that’s always a positive to begin with! They do Afro/European/Mixed-race hair (as they put it!), so all the basis are pretty much covered. I’ve been there a few times now and both times had high-lights done which turned out nice. I actually mentioned to her that I usually used Mixed Chicks, which is something she was keen to try out herself. I can’t remember which products she used on my hair, but again she cut my hair wet.

I normally get my hair blow dried straight when I get it cut, mainly because hairdressers never seem to know how to dry curly hair and it looks like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards time I’ve got home…I got her to dry mine straight, just for a change really.
Again very expensive, around £50/£60 - double that for the highlights though! I’ve even told my curly haired brother he needs to go there as he also has hair issues!

The best so far was probably my last cut with Carlos Flores who I found on this very site! What he doesn’t know about curly hair isn’t worth knowing! He made me feel at complete ease (I’m sure for at lot of us getting our hair cut is a traumatic experience!) and gave me loads of useful tips on the do’s and don’t of curly hair (He’s CG all the way and used DevaCurl stuff and did a co-wash). I think he comes to the UK about 3 times a year as he’s based in NY. He also advised I didn’t get it cut again for at least 8 months - which was refreshing to hear!

Hi Curlycox, I was just wondering if you have ever had your hair diffused curly at IDUK?  That’s what i love about the guys at unruly studio.  I have only been there once and I am going tomorrow to the new Hair and Makeup Dept where Claudio now works (Unruly is now closed for those of you who dont know).  He may not be the most talkative but at least i do not need to get my hair dried straight and can leave with great curls.

Yes, I have had my hair diffused at ID as well (wasn’t that great if I remember rightly - I always want to grab the dryer myself and do it!) I’ve stopped going there as Kelly would only cut on dry hair if she brushed it out first (which defeats the purpose!), so I’ve been checking out other places since.

Other places I’ve since been going to are Ben at Eleven Hair (he dry cuts, curl by curl) and I just went to see Matthew James last week (Birmingham) and he’s the only Deva stylist I know of based in the UK. He’s very good….probably the best I’ve been to as he’s the only one that gave my hair some kind of re-style!

You can still get it dried curly at ID - I always find I get better results when I diffuse my own hair as I know how it responds to being handled!

I’ve just come back from ID. I had a wet cut, with Jenny, as usual. I think she’s a good cutter (if anything maybe she doesn’t cut off enough!) but I’m never happy with the styling products she puts in it (some Mizani stuff, which leaves my hair looking really stringy).

I must say I had a bit of a bad experience today! I cancelled an appointment in July at short notice. Quite rightly, the receptionist said when I rang up that I’d have to pay a cancellation charge - completely reasonable and I agreed. During the call, I asked how they would like me to pay it, and she said someone would phone me back about it. No-one phoned me back at any point.

I finally got around to making a new appointment in October and when I went to pay at the end, I voluntarily brought the subject up and offered to pay the fine, but they told me it was ok and I didn’t need to! I asked if they were sure and they were adamant. I thanked them and thought that was the end of it.

Then I made another appointment for this afternoon. Everything was fine, I was pleased with the service and the cut I received. Then when I went to pay, the manager and the receptionist were faffing about for ages around the till. Finally the receptionist revealed I would be paying the charge on top of my regular fee. I was really surprised as not only had I asked about it repeatedly (and even had an appointment since the cancelled one), but I’d been told I definitely didn’t have to pay the last time I was there. They had two chances to ask me to pay it, I think that waiting five months is a little unreasonable, especially as they went back on their word.

Since it was a case of their word against mine, there wasn’t really anything I could do but pay it (and I completely accept that theoretically I did owe them - it’s just the principle of saying I didn’t have to, and then randomly deciding without telling me that I did!)

Try Stephanie - she’s based in the West End.  She spent ages cutting my hair and was very reasonably priced.  I’ve seen lots of good reviews about her on this site.  She’s going to train with Devachan some time soon - her number is 07515 80 6465.

Someone posted this as a separate thread, but I thought I’d mention it in here too. ID is now closed:

“It is with the deepest regret that we send this newsletter to inform you that as of Sunday 29th January 2012 Identity UK will be closing down.

Due to the current economic climate we have decided to concentrate on our first love - hairdressing and relinquish the obstacles faced in keeping a business afloat during a recession.

If you have an appointment booked after 29th January, Tony or Jenny will contact you in due course.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support and loyalty over the last 11 years, it has been a pleasure to work with such amazing clients.

Tony and Jenny will be working together locally, so appointments can still be made by calling 07847 913826.

All the best,
Mikey, Tony and the ID:UK team x”

Hi, I know many people have bad reviews about unruly but I’ve been there 3 times now to claudio and he’s great! Unruly closed down now but all the stylists are at a place called Hair and Makeup dept which has 2 salons, one in shepherds bush and one in soho.  My hair is 3b/3c and transitioning as I used to texturize my hair. Claudio was very realistic about my results as I currently have straight/wavy ends and VERY curly roots! The last time i went was in october and when he finished diffusing my hair I was so excited with the result.  Claudio may not be the bubbly chatty hairdresser you may want but he is cool and relaxed and very good at cutting my crazy hair! grin

Last night I did a bit of internet trawling looking for reviews or comments about curly hair cutters in London and I found a few mentions which might be worth looking into, can’t vouch for them myself. If anyone has tried any, please say any opinions..

Easton Regal in Clerkenwell (on Time Outs list of London hairdressers this isn’t mentioned, but in the comments someone says she has long thick curls and had a good cut there, I think with Hannah)

Aveda Covent Garden,  I know Joon is mentioned above in this thread, this one also says Zac, Vince or Christophe   http://www.london-se1.co.uk/forum/read/1/120667/page=2

10500 hair salon ( reviews at this link http://www.urbanpath.com/london/hairdressing-salons/10500.htm
mention Magda and Antony as good with curls).

Just editing as found this on 10500, although I also noticed it looks very expensive!
