Okay, so my hair is wavy/S’wavy… I think.
Here is a photo, though it’s not brilliant PHOTO

Now my problem is that it goes quite frizzy after washing, and I’m not sure why. You can just about see on the photo, that my right hand side is a little frizzy.
I have two different low-poos and two different conditioners. I do comb my fringe and sort my side-parting out, but always when my hair is wet. I only wash my hair every other day, and sometimes I leave it for 3 days or so if possible. I also have microfibre cloths that i use to dry my hair.

Another thing is that my hair seems to fall out all the time. My hairs end up everywhere, and I’m forever finding them on clothes, on my bed, and even on my boyfriend! XD
Now my hair doesn’t seem to be too thin or lack volume… So I’m not sure what’s happening here.

Also, how do I know if I need protein or moisture? I’ve tried to look through threads but I just get too confused with all the different treatments and that!

Thank you for any help! <3

Hey KatieLouise,

My hair is S-Wavy to curly. It’s got a stronger curl pattern than yours though. I’m not sure if your curls are cherub…....

Mine gets overconditioned really easily. in fact I don’t use a rinse out conditioner, ever. Just shampoo and use a leave in. If your hair is very fine, there are some good spray leave ins. I need to use a cream though or my hair goes frizzy. But…...if it’s over conditioned it goes fuzzy and doesn’t hold a curl. I also have to use lighter stylers so it doesn’t get weighed down.

My hair falls out alot too. I think it’s because, unlike straight hair when the hairs fall out straight away, with us curlies they kinda get stuck in the curls until you next wash it. As we don’t wash it every day it looks like a lot when we do. I’m sure some of the other curlies would be able to chip in with a more technical answer to that one though. :o)

In terms of protein, I think generally finer hair seems to like it. Everyone’s different though. When I first used protein my hair liked it. Now it’s a totally different story. It’s just a case of trial and error with protein/moisture and introducing it gently, say with a conditioner with protein in it. (I think the avocado and pear conditioner, which you can get in Boots has protein in it).

As the previous post said, because our hair is curly, the hairs that fall out every day (usually about 60-100 strands!) don’t fall straight out of our hair like straight hair does, and get caught in our curl pattern.  As we don’t usually brush our hair, most of this hair loss shows when we wash it, or detangle it with our fingers.  Don’t worry about this, unless you are getting handfuls out each time you wash or touch it, this is normal! Obviously if you don’t wash each day, you will get more hair coming out when you do wash.  I have invested in a shower trap for this very reason, as my bath plughole kept getting blocked up LOL!

As to the frizz, how much are you touching your hair?  Even when wet, too much fiddling with it will encourage frizz red face The less you touch curly hair the better (especially when dry).  If you haven’t already, I recommend you read the article How to Wash Your Curls.  You only need to massage your scalp when shampooing or cleansing, and even though I thought I was being gentle with my hair before, this made such a big difference to me!

Also the micro fibre towel you are using may be taking too much moisture out of your hair.  Gently scrunch your hair to get rid of excess moisture (ideally with something that is pure cotton, like a large t-shirt or the curl ease towel), and don’t rub it!

Add your styling products while your hair is still very wet; this helps keep essential moisture in your hair.  A good leave in spray is handy at this point (I personally use Mop Top Detangler Spray).  If you diffuse dry, try the Pixie method (look on YouTube for video’s on how to do this), and once your hair is dry don’t touch it unless you are adding product!

Humidity doesn’t help with frizz; I find Aveda Anti-Humectant Pomade good for this weather.  It does contain a cone, but it is water soluble.  I also find a cold water rinse after adding conditioner helps with the frizz; a bit cold first thing in the morning, but makes all the difference!  It makes your cuticles lie flatter.

As to protein, some people swear by it, others hate it!  I find my baby fine coloured hair loves protein, and do a protein DT once a week.  If your hair is fine and heat/colour damaged you will probably find the same.  Can’t remember where I read it, but if you take an individual strand of your hair, run your finger up it from end to root, and feel even the slightest bit of snagging, there is a good chance your hair needs protein.  Mop Top products contain protein (I can personally recommend these!), and I personally find MOP Extreme Protein excellent as a deep treatment.

Hope this helps!  Keep us updated on how you get on.

Emma.

Try using a gel or curl cream like someone else suggested to try and combat the frizz. Boots pink curl cream and purple gel are only about a quid a throw. As for protein or moisture, the best way to find out is just to take the plunge and experiment! My hair is quite coarse so in theory should hate protein, but I’ve found that a wee bit in the form of a leave-in conditioner plus gel over the top is a winning combination for nice perky waves with no frizz.
