Had so much stuff to say that I thought I’d start my own thread or I’d be all over the place trying to cover all topics!

A bit of background!

I feel that I only really started to understand my hair when I got to my mid 20’s. Up until that point I fought my hair, and anyone who has done that will realise it’s a losing battle!

When I was young my hair was frizzy, and I earned the nickname Crystaltipps at school - especially after I got into henna and got that purpley tinge! It was only when I was far older I realised that brushes were a no-no, conditioner was non-negotiable and that leaving my hair to dry naturally was the only way to go.

These days I’ve discovered that my hair is at it’s best fresh washed, finger combed through with conditioner to remove tangles, then wide toothed combed to spread conditioner, rinsed and then gel added while soaking, then left to dry. This results in large loose ringlets and virtually no frizz.

My fling with henna was on and off over the last 25 years. In the last 5 years I’ve been battling the greys. Last year I realised that henna wasn’t covering them anymore, and my greys are totally unrepentant, wiry white hairs which not only throw off any hair dye within 2 weeks, but stand proudly and wave at passers-by.

After seeing a video of myself 3 months ago I realised my naturally very dark hair was making me look older. Coupled with the grey hair problem I decided to do something I hadn’t done before but had always had a bit of a fancy for. I went blonde.

I had highlights put through my hair. I didn’t want a block colour, I wanted shades and tones. While I had in mind golden browns, caramels and pale chocolates, due to the henna I got varients of reds and ginger! Fortunately, I rather liked it!

After a month of getting used to the lighter shades (I wanted to go lighter by stages so it wasn’t a shock to my system!) I had lighter blonde streaks in the front. Now, after seeing the video of me looking old(to my eyes) I had wanted to look younger, and considering that I got ID’d at 2 supermarkets a month after getting my hair done I guess I got what I asked for!

While I love the colour, my hair has of course suffered. What used to be smooth and incredibly shiny locks became rather strawlike. After the highlights were put in I had abandoned my CG regime, deciding that the ‘salon formula’ products were the best way forward for me as they were designed for hair that had been processed.

WRONG!

My last visit to the hairdressers my hair was SO dry that she refused to colour it! I don’t blame her one bit! I tried yet more salon formulas, deep treatments etc to no avail. So I decided to go back CG and see what happened.

Gave my hair a last wash with sulphate shampoo to remove allthe cruddy silicone products I’d been shovelling on, bought myself a nice big bottle of Body Shop’s Rainforest Shine shampoo (my fav!), stocked up on Naked conditioners and brought back the Coconoil coconut oil and Umberto Giannini gel.

That was 2 weeks ago - what a difference already! Hair is already far far smoother and virtually no frizz.

Because my hair was so dry I coat my hair in conditioner, finger comb and then comb it through, then melt some cococnut oil in my hands and smooth this through. I’ve found that it adds smoothness but no sticky coating like it does when I use it alone. Just the right amount for me! The next day I sometimes need to redifine my hair. If I just add the gel, even watered down it makes my hair crispy. So I discovered a little trick last week.

I melt a bit of coconut oil in my hands, add some gell and mix the 2 together. This makes a ‘creme’ that isn’t too heavy for my hair, but conditions, adds shine and gets rid of stary frizzies brilliantly. Perfect!

So, I was lost, but after going back non-CG I really cann see what a difference the regime has on my hair.

Amazing!

smile  I enjoyed reading your story.

Great to hear you have a good routine working for you at last. I know that CG doesn’t work for everybody, but it’s always heartening to hear when someone does have good results with it. My own hair definitely looks and feels better for it, and I personally wouldn’t go back to the ‘cones. (The only ones I like these days are the ice cream topped versions, lol!) LOL

Best wishes.

Thank you!

I didn’t realise just how awful regular shampoos were for me until I went back to them recently! So harsh! And the styling products, despite being loaded with cones, made my hair frizzier!

Hi Dawn,

I am 38, and only tried the CG method 4 months ago (like you, battled with my hair before, and was also nicknamed Crystal Tips!!), but will now never go back!  If I ever get tempted, I just have to look at photo’s of my hair before LOL!  Not totally CG, still loo poo every so often, as the pomade I love does have a couple of cones in, but the extra moisture and gentle care I have learnt here have made such a huge difference!  The pomade is now the only product I use with cones in, and only use a tiny bit, so can get away with it.  Even my hairdresser commented my hair seemed to be in much better condition, and that was only a few weeks after going virtually CG!

All the best,
Emma.

So my greys had started to show again, and was shocked at how many I now have! Decided to go for it and get more highlights done!

Was a little worried about the damage to my hair, but, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Was very impressed with the people at Boosh salon in Swansea who did it. Had heard good things about them and they all turned out to be true! Hair was stripped and highlights applied to certain strands as I wanted different shades to enhance the curl and movement.

I am now ginger/strawberry blonde and golden blonde, exactly what I wanted!

Please excuse the silly expression on the photo - I don’t do ‘straight’ photos very well and always mess about!

Hair was very dry as expected straight after the colour. I began straight away with the following routine:

Co wash - Tresemme naturals
Condition - Naked conditioner (Blonder Lightening/ Smooth)

Once conditioner is on I melt coconut oil in my hands and add that to the hair. I then comb it all through and leave in for 5 mins while I shower.

Just a week after the highlights my hair is incredibly soft and smooth and feels in really good condition!

Am very impressed!

Thanks for sharing your story, my story is very similar.  I know what you mean about gray hairs standing up and proudly waving! I have not conquered this, some swear by rosemary rinse? Have you tried this? I found it on the great internet.

I too am still learning about my hair, I spent a large part of my life relaxing my hair!  I use to rock the Halle Berry look, I spent so much money trying to maintain that look.  Before that, I curly permed my hair which I also liked.  When I got pregnant, I went natural, only because my hairdresser refused to perm (straighten my hair, I did not realise it at the time, but she was doing me a great favour) I had to learn how to look after my natural hair.  When I discovered what my hair was actually like (curly) I could not believe I spent so much time using chemicals to recreate my curls.  I guess its not how long it takes you to arrive, the point is that you arrive!!

I haven’t tried the rosemary rinse, but I have heard of people doing it. Are you going to try it? Would love to know if it works!

Have recently discovered that adding a handful of olive oil to my hair when the conditioner is in it works even better on my hair than coconut oil! Really soft smooth hair for 3 days rather than my usual 2 before I need to wash!

Lucky!! My hair is black, so there is no way I am going to pull of dyeing my hair blonde.  I am still trying to figure out how to hard my grays.  I have heard of people also using hisbiscus in a rinse which gives a reddy tint but I have no idea how to get a hold of hisbiscus.  Do you know any suppliers ?

Hi Lyn you can get hibiscus here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hibiscus-dried-flowers-Tea-250g-3-99-Spiceworks-/230660672056?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Food_SM&hash=item35b4728a38#ht_2850wt_1037  I tried the herbal rinses for my greys but I didn’t really notice a difference.  I think that you have to do them regularly plus have patience for it to start making a difference (that’s maybe where I was lacking!) smile

My hair was only slightly lighter than black (natural hair colour is on my proflie picture),but I’d gone so grey that I thought I’d try it! I’ve chosen a very warm blonde with ginger in it and it looks ok, but I definitely wouldn’t suggest anyone else try it unless they’re as fed up as I was!

I’m sure someone here knows of a hibiscus supplier.I do recommend Henna Boy for fab natural hair colourants. I used to get my henna fromthere and they’re brilliant!

Today I got my hands on a bottle of Argan oil and am experimenting like crazy!

Have already added some to my conditioner when on hair and it washed out silky smooth. I then added mixed some up with my Curl Friends gel and applied. Still wet at mo so will check full results later!
