Sorry it didn’t go quite to plan but, yeah, take the best from it, these things are so often decided on the tiniest of things that really can’t be controlled by you. It’s not an indication of capability or potential, just situation and circumstance. Good news that things look brighter in your current job.
sorry you didn’t get it Emma but you got loads of interview experience that you can take - plus hopefully you’ll keep your current job - (keep your eyes open though for something else if you fancy it - I’m doing that at the moment as I really don’t enjoy my job) x
New update! I have got an interview on Thursday for the second job I went for! It’s still with the Council, but IT based, which is really where I want to be. Only problem it is fixed term for two years, so not a permanent post I know I’m getting ahead of myself (as not even had the interview yet!), but if I get it should I take it? I know you can’t tell me what to do, but really need to think long and hard about it, and my head is going round in circles, so helps to write it all down!!!
I’m not a risk taker by nature, but part of me thinks this would be too good an opportunity to turn down if I was successful. As a lot of you know, it is difficult to get into an area of work that you have no experience in (even if you know you are capable!), and this could be the perfect way in. It is a low level IT job (about introducing and training users on a new document management system), but still IT based, and a chance to show what else I can do IT wise (I recently did the ECDL, and they aren’t supposed to tell you your score, just if you passed or not, but I got 100%!!!). I did look at doing the Microsoft Systems Engineer course, and had an assessment that said I had a high aptitude for this, but I couldn’t afford to pay for the course. They also said I’d be well suited for web design, but same problem! And these days experience does seem to count for more than qualifications (ask any unemployed university graduate with a first!!).
My present job is looking safe at the moment, but this is a slightly higher paid job, and in an area I know I will enjoy and do well in. In this day and age not many jobs are safe, so have to decide if it is worth taking the risk of being unemployed after 2 years Saying that, even if my present job is safe, nothing to say that in two years time I won’t be in the same position. As with most of you, there is absolutely no way I can afford to be unemployed LOL! So do I sit safe, or get the experience I need to go further with an IT career?
I’m not expecting answers from this post, just good to get my thoughts down, and consider all the options. I may not even get it LOL!
I would take it emma if you get offered it if its something you would like more and if the pay is better - 2 years is a long time plus if you’re good at a job they may try and find another job with the council should this one def only last 2 years. Also, the job you’re in now, ok it turned out safe but who’s to say that that whole thing may not happen again?
Thanks both for your replies! I think deep down I already knew I would take it if succesful, but as I said, I am not a risk taker normally! But, as you say, in this day and age what job is safe? The pay rise is only about £1k a year, so not like I’d get used to a massive pay increase (!), and know I can always fall back to admin work should I need to. As much as I want to get out of admin, nice to know I have something to fall back on if needed! I have 20 years experience in different levels and areas of it (including finance), so know I should be able to find something if I need to at the end of this job
