Hey guys, i’ve been roaming the net trying to find an answer to this question but I was just wondering why a leave in conditioner is neccessary? if you seal your hair while its wet then shouldn’t plain water be enough?
thanks grin

It depends on the person as to what they need.  For me, I’ve never needed a leave in conditioner (couldn’t have used one anyway, due to my scalp problems), and to do so would have given me terribly over-moisturised hair.  Oil sealing on soaking wet hair is really good, but not for everyone.

For me, I would never use just water because it does not give much slip (or not enough slip), most of the water in england is hard water which makes my hair feel horrible and leave-in adds some softeness. it also makes the hair more pliable. But everyone is different. If it works for you, keep doing it?

I find that water on my naked hair does (of course) moisturise but it isn’t long lasting moisture as much of my hair is very porous and it also doesn’t provide much slip. I tend to use a leave in with water as the first ingredient that has slip for easy detangling and conditioning ingredients as they tend to leave my hair moisturised for longer.

thanks guys, I haven’t actually tried just sealing in with water but i don’t really like the feel of my hair with leave in… I’ll try and see how it goes… my hair does have a tendency to dry easily

Glad to hear that worked out well for you.  I’ve tried using a gel with aloe vera in it without a leave in before and it worked well for the first day, but second day hair was really dry and third day looked like I’d been electrocuted so I have decided that water is definitely not enough for me.  It’s important for me to be able to get 3 days per wash because of time constraints, but if i co-washed daily i suppose it wouldn’t be as much of an issue.

I’d be interested to hear if you think that method would last for more than a day or so…

I’ve always had to wash frequently because of my scalp, so maybe oil sealing isn’t a long lasting option…  I guess the moisture escapes.  I think it’s probably only a good option for those who wash frequently.

My hair needs something heavier to stay moisturised so that the water doesn’t evaporate as easily… that’s why I can’t get away with water and then sealing.

Hi Ayeshat…ok my hair is super dry and also seems very porous… Therefore if I wet my hair and let it dry with just water most of it seems to evaporate and i get crunchy straw feeling. Plus I’m not partial to soaking my hair everday. My leave in has aloe vera in it..which I thought was funny because you are sort of using a leave in when you put in the aloe vera.  The contidioners do act as softeners and make my hair more smooth, slippery and flexible i.e. less likely to break and tangle during styling or in general daily rubbing on anything including rubbing on itself. At the end of the day my hair feels dry again so I give it a spritz/dab of leave-in. It just depends on your hair type and your lifestyle routine. Cheers
