So, I have been SLS free for a couple of years now but that’s only in terms of my hair.  As I do suffer from quite dry skin I am know really considering going the whole distance and cutting it completely out.

I was looking at soaps and other body washes today and thought most of them didn’t contain Sodium Laureth or Lauryl Sulfates they did contain sulfates of some variety. So what I wanted to know was if there are any sulfates that don’t have such a harsh and drying effect and can be less harmful to use?

Thanks!

My household avoids sulphates in body wash and hand wash. Better for the skin and the environment. Mt plug holes get much less clogged too! We are still clean too!

It was initiated by my hair experiments but also because my husband has dry itchy skin. Cutting out sulphates for him has made a world of difference. Look out for organic ranges, we like organic surge ‘cos the smells are fresh and so unisex. Skin blossom, dr organics, nature’s gate also (hemp wash was particularly good). Faith in nature is also reasonable, but does contain ALS. Definitely recommend sulphate free all over.

Curly end of wavy. I get chunky ringlets and some elongated S shapes.  Fairly dense, medium texture, medium porosity.

Rotation is key for me.  Get on well with most Curl Junkie products especially CQ, CIAB, PP for stylers, Hard hold gel on top; usually BRHG.  Also CJ protein treatments.
Other stuff B&A Gel, EO conditioners, GFRS, Hairveda Sitrinnillah, Joico K-Pak reconstruct, Afroveda TT and CL butters.

SLES though - this is the ingredients for the refreshing Simple bodywash

Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide DEA, Sodium Chloride, Glycerin, Panthenol, Menthyl Lactate, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Polyquaternium-7, Dipropylene Glycol, Cucumis Sativus Extract, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Pantolactone, Anthemis Nobilis Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Oil, Methylparaben, Sodium Benzoate, Propylparaben, Sorbic Acid

checked the others and they have SLES too, one has SLS as well.

Thanks! But as I’m in Italy atm don’t have access to British products unless it’s Dove really. I wanted to know if all sulphates are harmless, eg Dove beauty bar has the following ingredients:

sodium cocoyl isethionate, stearic acid, coconut acid, sodium tallowate, water, sodium isethionate, sodium stearate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoate or palm kernelate, fragrance, sodium chloride, tetrasodium EDTA, trisodium etidronate, BHT, titanium dioxide and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate.

Is the ‘sodium cocoyl isethionate’ something I should be weary of?

TTS sulphates are effective cleansers, they mix better with oils than many other cleansers. I believe the one you mention is a more gentle and so less likely to irritate.  Depending on which horror stories you believe, I don’t think any of sulphates are especially harmful per se, just that some skin and some hair types will find them more drying because they are so effective at dissolving grease.

Thanks for the advice Julia! I bought some paraben and sulphate free soap today, wasn’t too expensive either!

No problem.  I have found plenty that don’t cost the earth and are easily comparable to other soaps and body washes - but then I am in the UK and have no idea what it’s like in Italy!  More and more products seem to be on the market here now; but then I can’t walk passed a health “food” shop or Organic store without looking in to see what products they have!

Have you tried the Naked range? They have no SLS, parabens or other yucky stuff in all their products. They are around £4 and my sensitive, dry skin hasn’t reacted to anything so far (unlike with Dove). Plus, they smell good.

Curly lox, if you’re still on he look out for facewash, try the elemis face wash for sensitive skin. It lasts forever (about six months!) and is very gentle.

I’ve actually been trying out the Boots simply skin facial foam wash thingy at the moment - it’s super gentle, literally a froth and super cheap! No SLS in there from what I can see!

I highly recommend H&B, they have a great range of SLS-free and paraben-free products. I use the face scrub in this range http://www.drorganic.co.uk/rose-products.asp. My skin has never felt so soft and I don’t have as much of a problem with oily skin anymore.
