Hi all,
I’m wondering it any of you had found yourself to be the laughing stock of the office following your newly found curls?
I went to work today, 1st time since embracing my curls, only to be the office joke. Everyone had something to say about the curls, which I understand as its a big departure from my usual hair in a bun look, but very little of it was complimentary. To be fair most peoples first words were ‘oh my god’ followed by what have you done?
I came home feeling throughtly dishearted :-(  and promptly washed my curls out and stuck my hair in a bun.
Now I’ve calmed down (but I’m feeling a bit blue over it)  and I’m thinking about going curly again tomorrow because I think I was beginning to get a bit fond of the curly mop. However I think I may burst into tears/deck anyone who comments tomorrow…and to add to that I’ve got to see my ex husband tomorrow who always HATED my curls.
Anyone else experience anything like this when first regaining their curls?

Thank you for your kind reply.
Think I might go for a half up style tomorrow, maybe that will ease them into it a little more.

I had this reaction when I first went curly curly again.  “Oh blimey, what did you do to your hair?” lol

I’ve learnt to ignore them.  Enjoy your curls x

I think the reason you got comments might reflect on something that is actually fabulous about curly hair - it is striking, it stands out, it does things people with straight hair find surprising.  If someone had normally worn their hair up then wore it down straight they might get the odd comment, but it wouldn’t be of that much interest unless they had exceptional hair.  But your hair out of the bun is interesting…it doesn’t just lie there!

I think you should have confidence in your hair,  they are probably surprised rather than not liking it, and if they aren’t used to it, they’ll catch up to its fabulousness in time.  Wear it how you want, it is a fabulous way to say to people, ‘this is me, I have confidence in me and I’ll be wearing it how I want’.

Hope I don’t sound too strident here, of course do what you feel comfortable with and I’m sure a half up, half down style will ease you in.  Don’t like to say too much regarding your ex as don’t know the story there, but if he didn’t like your curls well, I don’t know where that came from but I don’t think husbands have any business criticising their wives hair when they’re still married, and certainly not afterwards.  I’d go as curly as you can get, show him you like your curls and that if he has an opinion on them, it is irrelevant.

I think I must be a bit of a dragon becuase I know that if my partner didn’t like my hair, he would never dare say so, unthinkable territory!

ps.  I did have one job where I straightened for the interview, and they told the recruiter they wanted ‘the girl with the long straight hair’ - I was a bit anxious about that and straightened it for a while, then just one day gave up and went in curly.  People looked a bit startled but it passed quickly!

hmmm Aww, I feel for you moppatoppa, can’t people be just cruel!

Their reaction is probably because they are so used to seeing your hair in one style and it comes as a big shock to see your curls in all their glory. Sometimes when people don’t quite know how to react in such situation, they laugh and poke fun because their minds can’t quite compute this new information being presented before them (ie, your lovely hair) - sad but true! Given time, rest assured, they will get used to them, and then they’ll move on and probably focus on someone else to gossip about/ridicule in the bitchy world of office politics!

Best wishes and keep your chin up! wink

I have a colleague who gives me at least one cher comment and a cher song when I wear my hair down to work (normally I scrape it back into a bun/ponytail if I can’t be bothered styling it). To be honest it’s quite funny!

Curls are fabulous- why else would so many straight haired women try and get them with rollers, tongs and ghd’s. Yes, they look different but hey that’s not a bad thing. And as for your ex- there’s probably a good reason they’re an ex, lol tongue laugh

Keep with it. I get so many compliments about having curly hair. Sounds like your colleagues are just out to have a laugh, they probably think they’re just being funny and don’t mean to upset you. I’d just get involved in the banter and make light of it- but keep with the curls - We’ve got curly hair, deal with it people !!

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.
I went half up/half down today, not so many comments today. One old girl I work with say I look lovely with hair….. lol.  Maybe my bun was scraped back tighter than I thought! One of the male GP’s I work with didn’t say a word about my hair until I tucked it up in a ponytail for a proceedure this afternoon and then he was asking loads of question about the curls!
I did hear a colleague who had been the worst culprit yesterday saying how lovely it was and how in the 80’s she had paid a fortune for hair like mine.so maybe its just a case of the green eyed monster.
My ex…. loves long straight blonde hair, every girlfriend before/after me had it. I broke the mould and being young and oh so very naive I spent all our married life trying to have long straight blonde hair…. all this in the days before frizz ease, CG and metal straightning irons that took an age to heat up!
My (now) husband is away on business at the mo and will be home late next week… he’s already told me he is looking forward to leaving the USA on Thursday 26th April 2012 and arriving home on Friday 27th April 1982…... :-D I can’t wait for him to see the curls in the flesh so to speak!

Thanks again girls, you gave me moral support when it was much needed.
Xxx
