Hi!
I’m a new natural curly girl with type 2b - 3a hair (I think). My hair is quite fine. My problem is I seem to lose alot of hair when I comb it out /wash it. I only comb my hair when I am about to wash it. I have tried combing it when dry, combing when wet and also tried using a tangle teezer brush/comb. Whichever way I try I still lose alot of hair. I wash my hair once or twice a week.
I am using Lovea BioBurkina Shea Butter Nourishing Shampoo which is is sulfate free (sodium lauryl sulfate SLS, sodium laureth sulfate SLES, ammonium laureth sulfate ALES), paraben free & phthalate free. And also the BioBurkina Shea Butter.

I haven’t yet changed my styling products: still using John Freida Frizz Ease serum and secret agent creme. Not the best probably but have yet to research and decide on what to use.
I find I need to spray water on my hair everyday to revive the curls, with a bit of scrunching.

Would love to hear any tips/advice on how to care for my hair and on products! grin

Thanks!!

No matter what hair regimen you use, you will experience some shedding and hair loss - it’s part of the hair growth cycle. Unless you’re noticing actual thinning on your scalp (or if, for example, your pony tail is considerably thinner than you remember it being), I wouldn’t worry. If you are noticing significant thinning, then that’s more likely to be caused by a medical issue rather than a physical styling one, and for that you need to see a doctor type.

Keep in mind - if you’re only washing your hair once a week, then that’s a whole week’s worth of hair loss coming out at once. The general rule of thumb is that we lose between 50-100 hairs every single day - by the end of the week that’s up (maybe even more than) 700 hairs! And that’s going to look like a lot. (hair loss also looks like more than it is if your hair’s long).

Also, like most mammals, human beings sometimes go through shedding periods - and yep, they’re in the spring and autumn, just like a dog or cat. Again, as long as you haven’t noticed actual thinning, I wouldn’t worry about it.

If you’re concerned about breakage rather than straight-up hair loss, one thing that can help is adding protein to your hair routine. If your hair is fine, it will almost certainly benefit from the addition of protein, whether in the form of daily conditioners or stylers, or in a weekly protein treatment. Protein helps reinforce the hair shaft, and though it doesn’t repair damage forever, it can work as a bandage.

Hope that helps some!

I agree with Oddityofwings on adding some protein to your product arsenal.
It’s quite imperative for fine hair. As it helps ‘bulk’ up the fine strands thereby making the strands less susceptible to breakage.
As for shedding, that’s just inevitable. Rule of nature.

I have this problem too but I remember when I used to use argan oil, I noticed a lot less breakage and shedding. I stopped using it because I felt it made my hair too slippy and shiny - probably cos of how I applied it. I’m going to start using it again as I’ve found a new, better way to apply oil - with a blusher brush - red face strange but it works for me

Morning Sparky,

I’m gonna jump in here.  Hair loss.

Few things I’d like to know please,

a)  Are you under 50?

b)  Are you a Vegetarian?

c)  Do you have Thyroid problems?

This is NOT a joke post, I’m over 50, am a Veggie and do have Thyroid problems and my hair is fine but a lot of it.  However I noticed more-than-usual shedding last year, and yes, some partings seem wider than others and hair line receded both sides of forehead.

I did some research, and something MANY GP’s DON’T mention if you go to him/her with hair loss problem is, Iron/Ferritin levels in your blood, bound to be lower if Veggie/bit older ... INSIST ON A BLOOD TEST FOR FERRITIN LEVELS!!!!!

Back in March, mine was 31.  Now the Labs in this country have set a reference range of between
10 - 204.  SO, if your bloods test as a reading of 11, THEY CLASS THAT as normal and withing reference range.  BUT - it’s been PROVEN that women do better with a level nearer 90, and HAIR LOSS can start at below a level of 80!!!!!!!

I discussed this with my GP back in feb; decided to try and raise my levels to nearer 100 and I thought I’d be doing this for a year.  He prescribed Ferritin Sulfate (Iron tabs) but you can buy these over the counter, I now eat Bran flakes EVERY morning - the Tesco (own label) CHEAPEST Bran flakes have THE BEST Iron supplementation in; I take a multi-vit with Iron and, totally against my feelings, started eating Lambs Liver once a week - couldn’t bring myself to eat more.

Might have been *all in the mind* but I DID notice after a couple of months on this regime, less hair falling. Had the follow-up blood test mid - May.  WHAT A SURPRISE!!! It’s risen from 31 to 130.6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What’s more, I’m growing whispy (better than nothing!) new hairs around my hairline.

I urge you and anyone else reading this, to REQUEST A BLOOD TEST FOR FERRITIN LEVELS.  Your GP probably WON’T offer it, so ask for it.  They tend to rely heavily on *reference ranges*.

Good luck!!

I totally agree with ange, I too am on Iron tablets again, I had to take them last year for low ferritin levels n managed to sort the levels out, thinking about it now my shedding did seem less. Went back to docs few weeks back for blood test and this time they didn’t call me back they just sent me a prescription for iron tabs through the post lol. So gotta take em for 3 months (ange-we won’t mention wot is does to ya number 2s!) but I have also been making smoothies with frozen spinach in, with banana and other fruits you really can’t taste the spinach, I’m going to make a concerted effort to watch/analyze the hair situation because at the moment I definitley have thinner hair/receding points than I did last year, so hopefully this willl help, will let you know.
