Hi I am new to this site and need some advice. I have natural curly afro hair. Are there any recommended products to help with growth. Also my hair gets very dry if i dont put products in it for a day any recommendations for locking in moisture?

hi doll, welcome!
fist off congrats on being newly natural. first off you need to establish a hair regimen, which should consist of weekly washes deep treatments, daily moisturizing, with product if your choice and sealing in that moisture with an oil based product. the curl emporium has tons to choose from, but if u prefer use shop bought stuff if you like. I’m trying to explain the best i can, hopefully you’ll get more advice on this.
as you get more confident you’ll find things that u don’t like and things u do, go with it and have fun.
i wash weekly as well as deep condition, daily i moisturize with either a cream base or water base product whichever i feel like on the day. i always follow with sealing the ends with an oil ( coconut, olive, castor) are the oils i use at the mo.
always sleep with a satin scarf as u don’t want ur pillow (cotton I’m assuming) to dry out Ur hair.
you will eventual find what works for. have fun and god bless

oh i forgot to say, don’t believe these people who tell u that a product makes ur hair grow, it’s rubbish Ur hair grows regardless, it the products used that helps with Ur growth retention and the way u handle your hair.
treseme naturals shampoos and conditioners are great, ors hair mayonnaise is a great deep conditioner been using it for 14 yrs, kinky curly knot today, creme of nature leave in, and good old Sta-sof-fro is the business.

Kinkynap thanks for the help. I was using smooth and shine curling mousse but it makes my curls stiff. I just ordered the kinky curl products to try. So its safe to wash my hair three times a week or is it best to stick with once a week? I’ve been natural about three times. but this time my hair has grown out thicker.

Hello Shelita,

Regarding “washing” your hair, you can use conditioner like Tresemme Naturals silicone free conditioner
( superdrug, boots, super markets) to wash your hair OR a cleansing conditioner like Curl Junkie’s Daily Fix( sold at this website). If you have dry hair i would NOT recommend using a shampoo to wash your hair 3 times a week. In my opinion, that’s a recipe for straw like hair! Try conditioner washing 1 or 2 times a week at first and see how your hair feels.

If your styler is making your hair dry, check the ingredients to make sure a strong alcohol or silicones are not in it as these can dry SOME people’s hair out.

I could try and make some suggestions depending on how you like to style your hair. You could try something like Bee Mine Curly Butter if you like to wear ponytails for example as it defines curls with a very soft hold and is excellent to use if you like 2 strand twists plus it moisturises and can help to slick your hair down if you used a light on top of it to seal in the moisture as well.

Curl Junkie have good stylers. There are lots of brands in the Emporium to choose from so i am sure you can find a styler or moisturiser that wont give you dry hair.

i agree that products dont make your hair GROW but good ingredients and hair care practices, can help you retain more of the length you get. Don’t feel you have to wash your hair a certain amount of times each week, or deep condition every week(although weekly DT are very good to do). Everyone has different hair. some people have damaged hair so may have to deep treat or protein treat more than you would. There are always many factors and its all relative.
All the best.  smile
