What do I do with a broken hairline?

Hello all.

So after experiencing scalp and breakage problems over the past few months, I thought I had recovered and all was well again.  My scalp is no longer giving me any trouble and after introducing protein into my hair care, the breakage has eased off and my hair feels much better for it but for some reason, my hairline at the front has started breaking again.

I usually keep my hair in medium size twists between wash days but will once in a while wear a twist/braid out with the front flat twisted/canerowed or with a headband/scarf.  I do puffs very rarely but when I do, I make a point of only using a well stretched goody band/stocking so as not to put too much pressure on the hair line so feel as if I am doing all the right things so am confused about this breakage.

Looking back, I have always had problems with the front of my hairline whether my hair was natural, relaxed, wave nouveau or in extensions so maybe this is just how my hair is but how do I hide it?  I’m scared that wearing a headband/scarf more often will just make things worse.

Try having a few strands at the front-they’ll frame your face and it stops your hair being pulled back too tight
And also, just be really gentle with the front part cheese

Limit the pulled back styles and up the moisturising game around the hairline.
I’ve noticed some ladies fastidiously applying castor oil to their hairline in order to stop breakage on the forums.

Do you leave the hairline hanging down or pinned up? Right now my hair is in plaits for the last three weeks. I wash my hair with them in. How often do you wash? Twisting and re-twisting your hair more than once a week might not be ideal. Try massaging the area with a nourishing oil like neem twice a week. Try not to over manipulate the hair and you could try using a wig with wig cap and twists or plaits for a month to rest the area. You might need a protective loose style for a while until the hair recovers.

@ Curlcatastophe - I never used to leave my hair hanging down at the front but have started to do so since I noticed the breakage so am glad that you’ve suggested that anyway.

@ Ketchup - I upped my castor oil use now as I have also read about it to death on hair forums.

@ Marleyhill34 - I wash my hair once a week though recently while I was sick I left it for two weeks.  When my hair is in twists, I leave them in for two weeks at a time with the hairline generally out though pulled back under a headband for the gym but I may just leave the headband off for a while. I have been thinking about putting my hair back in plait/canerow extensions to give it a break but have had too many bad experiences of the hairdresser doing them too tight despite me asking them not to and making things worse.  As for wigs, I find that the combs to attach them break my hair.

I will definitely show my hair line more love and attention from now on.

Thanks for all your help ladies. smile

Cornrows/canerows can pull the hairline so probably not a good style. You can learn how to put in your own braid extensions through you tube and other sites. I do this for myself. because I don’t like how tight the hairdressers do them. Not all of the wigs have combs; some have draw strings….but you can always take the combs out and use a more preferable means of attachment such as hair pins. Yup probably leave the headband alone avoid anything that will put tension on the hair line. Also how do you dress your hair for bed? Having it rubbing and tangling on the pillow and sheets can cause problems.  HTH Good luck. Cheers.

I had no idea there were wigs without combs.  I haven’t worn a wig for two years now and that was a synthetic lace front but because I don’t like the glue idea, I used the combs and ended up losing hair where they attached no matter how loose I put them in so thanks for that.  I’ll get researching. At night my hair is always wrapped in a satin scarf/bonnet.  Yeah I think you’re right about me learning to do my extensions myself.

Thanks again

I usually have this problem with the hair at the nape of my neck…..its always extra dry & frizzy and just refuses to grow -even when I used to relax my hair.

Since being natural I realised that it is a moisture problem. My hair is really thick & generally v. thirsty so requires daily moisturising as standard, but the nape area requires an additional nightly routine of spritzing with plain water & applying a moisturising cream then most importantly the use of a satin / silk scarf.
Cotton /polyester materials just evil to my hair, they rob this area of all its moisture and make it parched dry/ frizzy in the morning .
