For those needing help deciding whether they need protein or not, I found this article really helpful.  There is also one on the main british curlies site here http://www.britishcurlies.co.uk/articles/article/the_curl_whisperer_on_protein_treatments/ which is also great.

(When Wet or Dry) Stretches slightly and returns to its original length without breaking, you are balanced! Stick with maintaining!

(When Wet or Dry) Stretches a little more than normal then breaks, you need more protein in your regimen.

(When Wet or Dry)Stretches, stretches, stretches with no significant breakage yet, add a bit more protein to your

(Wet)- Feels weak, gummy, mushy, or limp, you need to add more protein to your regimen.

(Wet or Dry) Experiences very little to no stretching, and simply snaps or breaks, you need to increase the moisture in your regimen.

(Dry) Feels rough, tough, hard, dry, tangly, brittle, or any combination of those, you need more moisture in your regimen.

Unsure? Err on the side of caution and give your hair more moisture. So now that you have figured out what type of hair breakage you have, what should you do?

When the balance is thrown off by too much protein

Hair that is shifted too far on the protein side will break easier, both wet and dry, because it lacks elasticity. Elasticity is what allows us to style, stretch, and manipulate our hair without breakage. Hair that breaks with very little tension or stretching is a sign of an overabundance of protein, and a deficiency of moisture. Any type of stretching or tension will break it because the protein goes in and adds structure to the hair. Too much structure makes the hair rigid, and decreases its elasticity. The result? Brittle, breakage-prone hair. This was the issue with Kim’s hair. She was feeding her hair more protein than she needed to maintain a healthy balance.

This is very helpful, CHM.  Thank you.  You may recall I was unsure about whether my hair is actually coarse, as my hairdresser has told me.  I thought the individual hairs seemed rather fine.  I’m leaning more toward coarse again now and this article is part of the reason.  My hair does break very easily.  Will keep it up with the moisure…

I loved the article but when it never stated that you should always use moisture and protein products seperately otherwise it defeates the object! Use protien first to strenghten then a mositurising conditioner afterwards to nourish.
Protein can be used on coarse hair if its damaged and is particulary need if hair is coloured/chemically treated but it depends on how concentrated the protein/product is.

Check out my blog http://hairhaven.blogspot.com for more info on protien/moisture balance.

Michelle you will start to notice when your hair needs either protein or moisture.  Be cautious at first with protein till you’re sure your hair is ok with it (fine hair usually loves protein whereas coarse hair is not so keen on it).  check if any of the co’s you are using just now has protein and if they do chances are you’ll be ok. (If you overdose on protein your hair can go very straw like - whereas overdoing the moisture isn’t quite so bad as you’re hair would be probably lank and maybe producty feeling).
