i was just wondering how many type 4’s are registered on this website as i have noticed that a lot of the forums are mainly re: type 3 curlies. It would be great to hear from and see more posts by type 4’s. if you are quite experienced in hair and curl maintenance it would be really great for us newbies to hear from you so we can learn from your experiences etc.

thanks in advance & kind regards,

I’m type 3 hair but I’ve worked with type 4.
My advice would be top use a good rich leave-in to detangle and smooth out the hair to prime it before applying any other products.
I also would say that you should DEFINITELY use an oil/butter/pomade on your hair once it’s dry as a sealant - type 4’s especially need this.

thank you both for your quick replies, its very encouraging smile

in response, my hair is colar bone length in its natural state, so i tend to wear in a ponytail at present.

i was also wondering which leave in conditioners are best for type 4 ( i have tried organic root stimulator olive oil leave in moisturiser but later realised that there’s a lot of petrolium which im trying to avoid) and which products would be best in winter and for the days when i dont want to wear it curly but tied back ( no straight though).

i know that trial and error is part of the journey but i’d rather not mess with too many different things uneccessarily lol!

There are some great products that would be good for type 4 hair from Anita Grant (google it!)
And AOHR would be fab for type 4 hair.

thanks ella,

i will look into the product(s) you mentioned.  i’m also going to take the plunge and get some kccc products. which 3 products from kccc would you suggest i get first?

i think one of the problems i’m having is truly identifying my curl type as its not strictly 4a as it spirals alot especially with products, gel and a denman brush.  when its wet it looks like a jeri curl smileyet when its dry it has little waves through it. when its dry the texture is sort of fluffy and soft.. its not easy to explain really lol! i guess the best thing is to just try products rather than over analysing the “type” although the catagerosing can help you to select what may work best for you.

anyway thanks again.. i’ll let you know how i get along with kccc -  i hope it works!

I’d recommend for starters the KC come clean, KCCC and KCKT. If you can, I’d also say get the KCGP - I LOVE it!

Hi Triple A,

I agree with Ella and I would recommend you have a look at the Guide to applying Kinky-Curly on the homepage of British Curlies. I am sure you will have great results. Please report back and let us know how you get on. grin

It might be worth creating a fotki so we can see exactly what you’re working with. you should have a look at other 4a’s regimes and products to see what works for them, tweaking others techniques to suit you is a good method.

hello lyoness,

thanks for that suggestion, i may well do a fotki at some point..

i have been doing alot of research actually on other forums ( mainly based in the states) youtube has some very good tutorials for type 3 / 4/ 4&3 mix. e.g : the nappturality site is very good. There’s also ladies like prettydimples01 and rusticbeauty ON YOUTUBE who are quite informative ( check their videos’s type 4’s) she has natural hair and is a hair stylist with type 4 hair.
By the way, you have beautiful hair ! are you a type 3?

Thanks Keisha Jo and TripleA!!!
To be honest I don’t really know my type so I say 3c/4a or the other way round.

I have quite a few YTbers I’ve subscribed to it might be worth us all combining them in a thread divided by hair type? That might help along with fotkis/photobuckets(whatever online albums ppl are using).. just a thought
