I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference between a butter and a pomade, I know what they are but I’d like to know how and why they are used differently. As a kid I’ve had lots of experience with pomade through braiding my hair for school and also being taught to apply it to the scalp.

hi all i have tried both Oyin and AG products

@Mims the Pomade is more for slicking back and for hold particular the coconut pomade its quite firm to the touch. Whereas the butter is very soft and more for moisturising in my opinion than for providing hold. The pomade is not for the scalp its not a grease its a styler but not like a gel.

Re: Oyin

I have used the Honey Hemp conditioner which is absolutely fabulous i loved it at the time. I have used the Burnt Sugar Pomade which i still have its more like a traditional hairgrease and it does indeed smell like burnt sugar. I have used their whipped butter which my hair didnt really like it left a white residue but my skin loved it. I have also tried the Grand Poo bar my hair didnt like it it left it feeling waxy and dried out and it didnt bubble much. I think i still have some in fact.

Hi Ladies,

Just wanted to say hello and that i am also a Type 4a i believe!! i’ve loved reading through this thread & am currently laughing at myself as i am @ work wiping olive oil from my neck and forehead, i belive i went a bit overboard!lol! I’m currently using Q-curly custard and olive oil as a leave in which seems ok so far! Has anyone hear had bad experiences with this product, my curlies are very tight and are defines but have a little frizz closer to the roots! Can anyone suggest a leave in that will define my curls further, creams seem to work best for me!

Hey ladies!! So glad i discovered this website. I’ve been natural all my life, but over the past few years i’ve been learning more and more about natural hair and realising i haven’t been taking care of it the way i should at all!! Ya live and ya learn, as they say! : )... sooo now i want to take better care of my hair and grow it long and strong!

I look forward to getting to know u all and hope to learn a lot about taking care of my VERY type 4 hair!! lol

P.S i saw a post about OYIN BURNT SUGAR POMADE. I bought it recently and i absolutely LUV it!! My hair loves oils, especially castor oil which is one of the main ingredients, so it works great as a sealant and really leaves my hair soft, when applied on damp hair.

Am not sure if any of you are aware, but there is an online UK outlet that sells most of Oyin’s popular products. The website is http://www.nexrastore.co.uk

i loved Anita Grant’s shampoo and Rhassoul conditioner, but I just can’t afford it.  I find her products really lovely, and her service is great too.  if you want to treat yourself, definitely give them a try.

I was a bit disappointed with Oyin Handmade, maybe the hype from blogs and youtube made me have too high an expectation…

The whipped butter felt no different to shea mixes I make myself. The burnt sugar is nice, heavier than the Whipped Butter, but not worth the dollar in my opinion. It’s great for use on the body however!

...have you tried 100% coconut oil?  Its amazing!

I like it when hair is damp as it almost glides on - and once it has soaked in, there is so much shine, but no ‘greasy’ feeling but it can also be used on dry hair.

Can be purchased really cheaply from any indian grocers (i think they use it in cooking so will be with the other oils) about 99p a bottle… let the bottle sit in hot water for the oil to become liquid.

A lot of people seem to be going crazy over elasta qp olive oil and mango butter moisturizer. It appears to define curls and works well for kinky hair types. I watched / read tons of reviews that are all mainly good. I can’t wait to try it (and its cheap!)
