I am so pleased to have found this amazing site!! Since November 2009, after years of really being unsure what to do about my frizzy messy hair, decided to look for tips and hints on what possible products I could use on my hair!

I wanted curly hair - knew it was naturally curly, but didn’t know how to maintain it! Mouse only made my scalp itch, and it was always, always dry!

I bought the curly girl book from a local bookstore, and still searching online - and found you!!! I tried a few of the recipes (oils, essential oils (my hair seems to love oil, and the more the better!) But still after a day or two of rinsing out, dry, dry, dry again!

I have so many questions!

I can’t work out my hair type, or the texture, or the porosity of it!!

I think 3a maybe 3b - but the rest don’t know!

I just bought original source mint and tea tree conditioner last week.. but didn’t know that was only supposed to be as a co-wash conditioner, and to use a rinse out?! I don’t think my hair is brittle, but always very dry to the touch, the ends especially!

Live in the North quite near the sea - wondered if the salt in the air could be contributing or if it is just that my hair type isn’t having the best treatment!!

Think I tried to put a photo up of part of my hair! Since using oils and no shampoo, on my hair it seems to be growing finally, too! (only been trying 3 years!)

Hi SarahLouise - welcome to British Curlies!

Just looked at your photo - it’s quite small so difficult to see your hair. Could you post another, larger pic up?

The sea air could contribute to how your hair feels and behaves - salt can be quite drying.

The OS conditioners are quite light, so are best for cowashing. You would need something a bit more moisturising for a rinse out. As a start, I’d use the OS to cowash, get a moisturising conditioner and a protein conditioner for rinse outs and a styling product like a gel (Boots essentials range do good, cheap curl cremes and gels for under a pound). Take a good look round the site for ideas on which products to experiment with.

There are lots of sticky threads about hair texture and porosity in the New British Curlies forum which could help you.

Good luck grin

Hi SarahLouise and welcome!  Things will get better for your hair - have a good read through the threads and look for someone who has similar hair to yourself and see what products they are using.

Hi,I agree about the OS Mint conditioner,if you have dry hair you will def need something more moisturizing as I find this doesn’t offer much in terms of moisture and may actually have a drying effect on some peoples hair, thats why I don’t use this on the lengths now.

A hair mask will be a good idea as Tallgirl suggested.

Thank you so much for this help, CrystalTips. Just managed to get a new photo uploaded!!! Hope that shows how my hair is! Was impressed, don’t think you normally see the back of your hair easily!!!

I think that’s what I have been finding with the OS conditioner, it is just not enough, but cleans so well! I love how it tingles - and how my hair has been feeling soft for a few hours after drying!!

Will look around for advice on which conditioners I need to go with the OS! There is just so much to this site!!! So many HAIR ideas! It’s great, i’m still amazed!!!

Think I found that my hair is course or maybe medium/course, and probably have normal porosity, and think after looking at the photo again, I have 3a/3b hair! It’s amazing to find all this out after so long of not knowing what my hair was, or how to even care for it! I;m the first person in my family to have curly hair, so it was a shock to everyone, and no one knew how to advice me, never thought to look online for forums such as this!! grin

Going to nip to boots tomorrow, see what I can find! (I use a cone gel at the moment - knew it was bad!! but didn’t know where to find an alternative for it! was thinking i’d need to go on holiday to the states! Hehe That would have been an expensive gel!!! grin

Tesco usually stock Tara Smith and Louise Galvin products - which are CG friendly. I would say Boots is a good place to start. Check out this list of products, cost and where to get them:

I get my products from all over!  Mostly conditioners from boots as they have a wider range and I go through a lot of it!  Supermarkets can be very variable with what they stock, most of the ones around me are not very good.  Health food shops do some nice ones too.  And I get my stylers and masks from the emporium, i find its worth spending a bit more on these items.
