Has anyone tried these styles and if so how did they turn out?

I was excited to try out these styles after watching the style videos from Miss Jessie’s and Youtube but they don’t seem to be working for me. I’m starting to wonder whether its because I have three different textures in my hair (which tends to make my hair look uneven) or maybe I need to wait till my hair has grown out more. I really don’t know.  Right now, I have 4-5 inches of natural hair since the BC and my only successful styles so far are Wash n Go’s and wearing a pony puff.

I’ve included some pics of my hair at the moment. The first is of my hair a month ago and the second is of my hair at the moment.

What exactly is going wrong when u r trying it? R u nt getting any definition, do the twists not hold etc? Also lovely hair pics! Do u do flexi-rod sets on wet or dry hair?  I’ve seen people with different hair textures to get a more uniform look, including people with your hair type. the girl at the maneandchic blog has a similar type to you, she is 3c/4a and she does them all the time, so I don’t think the different hair types should stop the style coming out right.

Thanks Lela! smile
Definition isn’t a problem, but I seem to have a hard time getting the twists to hold once it comes to taking them out. I do the flexi-rods on my hair whilst wet. The maneandchic blog is also one of my favourite hair blogs but I can never seem to replicate the same styles. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.
As I don’t have an overhead dryer, I just use my handheld dryer to set the twists or if I use the rods. I usually wait until my hair is about 80% dry (because my hair can take ages to get completely dry) and then take them out. I end up with uneven non-uniform curls.
Its strange because I read that a lot of people usually use twist-outs or rods to get more uniform curls and that it helps blend the different textures.

Well, I think you may need to try and stop replicating styles exactly! Even people with the same hair type can have very different results to you, so u have to work with what u have. I used to get frustrated because my styles never seemed to come out like the people did on youtube, but I learnt to embrace the difference and have to make the results work for me! I have even had to invent my own hair styles! What about doing them the night before, and allowing them to set while u sleep,- that’s what I do, or using a better holding product. The setting product I use makes a big different to how my hair comes out.  For twist outs u could try lock and twist gels. A lot of people use them with great results. Organic root stimulator lock and twist gel and jamaican mango and lime lock and twist gel, seem to be liked by everyone when it comes to twist outs. Also I don’t think drying for twist outs is as effective if u don’t have a full head dryer, but I’m not sure about that. Maybe that’s making it worse? Could u try sleeping with the rollers in ur head instead?

Also, mane and chic swears by using perm papers to wrap her hair at the ends when she does a flexi-rod set. She says that help keeps the curl shape and keep it uniform. I actually went to go and get some!

I learnt how to use perm papers from watching this vid. This is a perfect vid on how to do flexi rod sets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDaCFNmJ4fQ

You can get them from Sally’s. I’ve been doing my flexi sets on dry hair due to shrinkage, but I may try it on damp hair now!

Thanks for the tips Lela.
I think I’ll try doing twists at night and have them set that way. I think the problem may have been not allowing the twists to set properly in the first place. When I’m doing twist-outs, I usually use Miss Jessie’s Curly Pudding/Curly Meringue which my hair seems to love at the moment and I always get great curl definition from using them.
As for the flexi-rod styles, I think I might wait till my hair is a bit longer (and have purchased an overhead dryer) before I start experimenting with them again as they can be rather time-consuming.

I’ve done both. I went to the salon for the rod set; it was done on wet hair (it took too long to put them in, I almost cried) and then I went under a hooded-dryer for two hours (I have a lot of hair), it looked great as the curls started to loosen then my hair started going straight so I washed it out.

I twist on damp hair and keep them in over-night and when taking them out (only if they are completely dry) I put a tiny bit of oil on my fingertips.

p.s. Your hair looks adorable, its so pretty!

Do u find when u twist on damp hair u get a lot of shrinkage. I’ve only ever done it on dry, because I’m scared of the shrinkage!

Not really, its less than when you do them on wet hair. I keep them weighted by clamping the ends with my t-rex clips so them dry downwards (in two days they’ll shrink back up anyway).

These are what I’m talking about. They sell them at PAKS too, its a bit pricey for the quantity but regular hair clips keep snapping off, with these I can secure my hair into two sections easily. If your strands are fine, normal hair clips will work just as well.

re hooded dryer..

i am under an e-z bonnet dryer right now- £6.99 PAKS talk about a bargain! what you do is u attach ur normal hand held dryer to the hose and swich on, the bonnet puffs up and its like ur under a dryer without the hefty price tag or taking up all that space. when your done with it, fold it and chuck it at the back of your wardrobe or whatever… tip make sure you put your dryer on the lowest setting for heat and pressure otherwise your dryer will overheat and stop workin =)

just thought this might help with your twist outs whilst getting them to dry properly.

They are sectioning clips, I only add them to the ends of my twists. If you’re talking about how to use flexi-rods, then you roll hair in one direction then bend the ends inwards.

Hi Zenith88 yes the only reason your twists/ rod sets are not working for you as that they must be 100% dry before you take them out. Your hair is gorgeous by the way and I am pleased the Miss Jessie’s is working for you. They work perfectly for me and I have a hooded dryer Babyliss that I got from Argos years ago and it really was worth every penny as I use it often especially in Winter! smile

Thanks for all the replies and compliments everyone smile

I recently tried a rollerset and used my bonnet dryer for about 45 mins. I’d say my hair was about 90% dry, the results weren’t perfect but there was a definite improvement and the curls held much better.  I guess its just one of those things that takes a bit of practice.
But I think for now I’m just going to stick to wash n go’s and pony puffs until I get a bit more length to experiment with.

If your hair is thick/dense, ignore the quoted message. I’ve already lost four of those clips to my monster-hair mad
