My friend has had some trouble with her hair not curling like it used to since Breast feeding and has considered straightening her hair. I think she may have also lost a fair about of hair, but not sure. She also suffers with ME, so everything is a real struggle for her. I’d love to give her some advice if anyone else has some. I’d say she is a type 3b.

I have my own problems with my curly hair, but not because of pregnancy =)

Hi and welcome curlz. I expect hormones will play a part after giving birth (unfortunately when I had my children I was blow drying my hair so don’t know how it affected the curls).  May take a little while to settle down.  think also it can go either way - hair could be a lot curlier or less curlier.  I would say pay a good attention to diet and what you are eating.

Hi Triple A - nice to see you in here again smile

Also, hormones during pregnancy mean that you end up holding onto a lot more hair than you usually would…but then after birth, it all comes out,. It looks like you’re losing massive amounts of hair, but its like you’ve put your hair up for 9 months and all the hair that should have been shed comes out.

hello all, smile  thanks Efuru and CurlyMich for the welcome back.. its nice to log on again. inbetween feeding baby!
so far so good. i have not noticed hair loss, as such this time around. my hair went finer when i had my daughter i think because i pressed it after. it was intially really thick. i have had good growth though. i wont be using heat like the first time which really was a bad idea. i just want to do some deep conditioning and take good vitamins to help my hair recover from being zapped of nutrients.. any suggetions any one..?  smile

Hi all! Justa quick question about planning for a baby and pregnancy. Ok it maybe a daft question but just curious with all the ingredients and the oils in the curlyhair products that are on this site, are they all safe to use throughout planning, pregnancy and breastfeeding? I think Rosemary is one of them not sure but if anybody could tell me what they are i would be grateful to know Thanks for all replies surprised

Hi curlylocks - best to get professional advice re this question. I do know that some aromatherapy oils are not safe to use during certain months of pregnancy. If you have a Neals Yard near you, the staff are trained in this area. They also sell books that are specifically related to pregnancy - infact, they used to have a factsheet re oils and pregnancy.

Hi all, i am late chipping in. With regards to hair changing after pregnancy, gosh, i am still in that phase.
My hair got extremely thick during pregnancy (and i got pregnant about 4 months after my big chop) so i thought that my hair was just naturally thick. About 3 months post-partum, i started shedding a lot, i was expecting that, but i wasn’t expecting to see handfuls of hair in the bath tub, then my hair started breaking as well. I was doing all i could to try to stop it, then i just gave up and continued with my usual regimen. I lost so much hair!! my edges disappeared, about an inch at least from where they used to be, i also lost about 3/4 of an inch on the front. i am now nearly 8 months post-partum and the hair is growing back. The mad shedding stopped about 2 months ago, and now it is just regular shedding (not much).
I discovered i actually have quite fine hair (some strands are medium in thickness). My curls were also tighter during pregnancy (more of a 4a type), now they are quite a bit looser, mostly 3c, and the back and sides near my ears are more like 3b).
All to do with the hormonal changes (the shedding). It was quite a tough time and i thought many times about just shaving the whole darned thing off!
now that baby is being so active, i find that i want to cut my hair short again, just for easier maintenance.

I read in a hair magazine that taking folic acid post-pregnancy is beneficial for hair loss. Wish I’d have known years ago!

Hi Curlywifeymummychick, i did take prenatal vitamins and my folic acid till month 6 (same as i took them during the pregnancy). It didn’t help much with my excessive shedding. i think it also depends on the individuals and how “unbalanced” your hormones became during and after pregnancy.
My hair is growing back now, it feels healthier and not as thin, but i think it just had to go through that phase.
How is your hair now?

Yes, true. I also forgot that post-baby I was anaemic/low iron count, which is linked to hair loss apparently. I’m blessed to have a thick head of hair, 5 1/2 years on (thanks for asking!) Agreed, sometimes it just has to happen, but that’s ok to say only if your hair grows back! Glad yours is on the up.  grin

Hi,

I am jealous of the thick haired folk! Mine used to be thick, and was really long and thick after my daughter was born but after my son has been so different! I lost sooo much hair, he is 20 months now and all over my head I have this short curly new growth. Overall it looks so uneven and the old hair sits funny over the new stuff underneath. I have started taking moringa powder as a supplement for general health, hope it helps my hair too! Will cave in soon and get a load cut off I think.
Made me wonder if it was related to the sex of the baby? Maybe just my old age lol!!!
Good to hear others experiences.
