The first natural hair beauty school has opened in Tennessee. The school, named, ‘The Institute of Beauty,’ opened by Tamika Turner, is the the only place where beauticians can go to learn how to style natural hair. “They will learn about the integrity of the hair, and keep the integrity of the hair. They won’t have to result to the chemicals and different things of that nature,” Tamika explained.
The Institute of Beauty’s website explains the teaching; ‘In 300 hours our program prepares students with hands on training in Natural Hair Care, Braiding Techniques, Extensions, Natural Products and More. This is the first school to offer a course under Tennessee’s Apprenticeship Model.’
Students are travelling from all over the state to attend the school, popularity more than what Tamika expected. ‘’Our goal was to have 20 students. Now we have 24 students and we have 15 students on the waiting list,” Tamika told WREG.
Traditionally, In order to become a licensed hair care professional, trainees must attend cosmetology or beauty school and pass their state’s exam for a license. However, traditional schools don’t teach hair stylists how to style and care for natural hair. Learning how to style and care for natural hair is learned from family members or online research.
The Institute of Beauty also charges a lower fee than the cosmetology or beauty schools.
Students split their learning, spending seven and a half weeks learning at the school and seven and a half at a salon “So they can earn while they learn,” Tamika explains.
The Institute of Beauty opened on June 2nd and has become such a hit that Tamika is looking to open another location by the end of summer.
“It’s huge because a lot of women are transitioning from relaxed hair to their more natural hair and it is really a big market now,” said Stephanie Macklin, one of the institute’s first students.
