My name is Jorgelina and this is my hair history.
I was born curly and wore my curly hair all my life, I’ve never worn it straight or ever wanted to straighten it. However, I did grow up in the late 70s and had my teen years in the 80s and back then parents really didn’t know that curly hair is meant to be dealt with differently to straight hair so they’d use shampoo and brush it dry and no leave-in cream was left in to protect and moisturise my hair, so my curls were quite puffy and mostly undefined as my hair grew longer. They always looked their best when we went to the seaside on our summer holidays because the sea always made my curls pop.
Most of my childhood and teen years passed by with my hair up in a ponytail or two ponytails due to school rules and also because I was in the swimming team of the sports club my family and I were members of, so hair always needed to be out of the way and only wore it down for special occasions.
In my teen years I started styling my own hair and I remember using some sort of paste / cream that came in a tube like a toothpaste tube which would give me some sort of wet look defined curl, but sooner or later the curls would puff up in search for moisture and products that would give me hold. I also discovered that if I washed with conditioner first to detangle, then a quick shampoo and then conditioner again to moisturise then my hair didn’t feel as dry.
In 2005 I discovered Naturallycurly.com and everything changed. There I learnt how to properly look after my curls, and stopped shampooing and started the process of finding which hair products worked best for me. My routine became co-washing, leave-in cream and gel both applied in the shower on completely soaking wet hair. As years went by, I came across the LOC method on different forums and then I ventured with oils, my favourite so far is extra virgin olive oil which I use on top of my cream and under my gel.
When I was young I’d get compliments on my hair and I loved how curly my hair was so could not believe how much more curlier it got just by making some changes in my routine and products. Now I love my hair even more!
As for the present time, I’ve moved from Argentina to the UK 3 years ago and my hair has suffered the change; the hard water made a huge difference in my curls, back home I didn’t even know I had soft water and that it could be so different from place to place and not being able to purchase my holy grail products from back home has also influenced my curls. So I find myself in the search for new products to fit my trusty LOC method technique.
I’m now in my 40s and I think my hair is beginning to change, I’ve lost a lot of hair in the last 2 years and it seems to be growing less. I still haven’t found any grey hairs, though, but I’m not afraid of them, I think I won’t mind going silver…we’ll see 🙂
Today I again find myself on a new hair journey to discover and understand how my hair is changing with age while still loving my curls every step of the way!
