I hadn’t realised that for a long time I had become obsessed with smooth shiny soft curls. If day two hair wasn’t perfect and frizz free, it was banished to a ponytail or a bun.
To think I have been carrying on like this for a while. It isn’t bad for my hair, In fact it’s probably better for it being in a protective style. It just wasn’t good for my self esteem. I really love to wear my hair down but I was spending most of my time with my curls balled up on top of my head. I haven’t spent the last year conditioning my life away to hide these bad boys!
The other day, I was on ‘day three hair’. I had been wearing it in a loose high ponytail for work and had a birthday meal to attend. I wanted to wear my hair down but thought it was a lost cause as I had no time to wash my hair. Disaster.
Genius idea, make the frizz worse!
Then, I had a genius idea… Make my hair look ‘even worse’ and increase the frizz… my back up plan, if that didn’t work was to have a huge ponytail and rock that.
Using my pick (which I very rarely use) I started to fluff my roots. I instantly found that my hair was getting a good shape back. I had way less definition than I normally like and a lot more frizz than I’ve been used to wearing, but I loved it. I felt like a rockstar or someone who can kick butt because they’re so individual.
The key to picking hair is to focus on the roots, I flipped my head upside down to begin with and just put the comb into the roots and ‘lift’. I don’t try to comb my curls out, that’d be taking it too far! I then put my head up the right way and do some focused picking on selected areas that look like they need better positioning. Don’t be afraid to use your pick to create volume, it really is a massively useful tool.
My curls were left an extra day with a big fluffed up ponytail before washing. By embracing the frizz and growth that can come with curls, I’ve allowed myself way more time between wash days and I’m back in love with my imperfectly perfect curls!
As curlies, we know our hair isn’t perfect, but people still love it! I’m still teaching myself to love its unpredictable behavior. Every day there is a new challenge.
Next stop, a mane like Fro Girl Ginny! I wish. If you don’t know who she is, go find her and be prepared to have lions mane jealousy.
