The sun is finally starting to shine in the UK, which means spring is on it’s way! The flowers are in bloom, the birds are singing and we couldn’t be happier. So, what does this mean for our curls? Here are our top tips to maintain your curls this spring.
It is important to continue deep conditioning throughout spring and summer. You don’t want to run the risk of losing the moisture you’ve worked so hard to maintain during the winter months. If you are finding your deep conditioner too heavy, opt for a lighter product, or even leave it a bit longer between treatments.
If your hair is feeling dry or damaged, choose a conditioner with protein. The protein will help with any damage by filling the holes in the hair strand. This will smooth the appearance and reduce frizz. A must for coarse, porous curls.
Lock In Moisture
Spring can be quite humid and the weather can change from day to day, so it is important to maintain the moisture. On or humid days – where the dew points are higher, you will also want to keep the moisture that is in the air out. It is the additional moisture in the air that can cause curly hair to frizz. Sealing your curls with any products that contain polymers, such as VP/VA Copolymer will help minimise frizzy days.
Using polymers, as mentioned above, in your styling products will lock in the moisture. Silicones will also also achieve this which means you will have to use a clarifying shampoo to remove residue and product buildup. This will ensure your hair is completely free of any left over products before you add conditioner, allowing the conditioner to penetrate your hair.
You may find your winter products have become too heavy. There is more moisture in the air, allowing your curls to stay moisturised easier. Heavy oils and stylers may weigh your curls down, making them listless. Choose a lighter styling product if this is the case.
