Photographers and married couple, Regis and Kahran Bethencourt are showcasing the beauty of natural hair with their World of Curls project. The pair have travelled the globe photographing children with natural hair in a plan to release a fine art book of their snaps.
In an interview with The Voice they expressed the impact the fashion world has on children and self image. “When we first started working with child models we would receive snapshots of the kids before the shoot with beautiful natural hair. When they would come to the shoot, they would show up with their hair straightened because they thought that they needed to do that to get into the industry.”
8 countries, 16 shoots, 33 kids sums up the first part of our recent world tour. On Monday, March 6 we will be releasing some of the amazing photos captured during our trips. Connecting with local models and designers we were able to photograph the beauty of natural hair kids around the world with our own signature editorial style. We wanted to showcase not only the kids in each location, but the environment so that viewers can get a glimpse of everyday life in each different location. Fashion World Curls
As fashion photographers, it is hoped that the book will support their work in the fashion world, showcasing the beauty of young people celebrating their natural hair texture. Traveling across countries such as England, Ghana, Cuba and Greece, they have captured the beauty of natural hair in a bid to raise awareness for general misconceptions about how hair ‘should’ be styled. Speaking of the World of Curls project, they went on to explain “So far we’ve visited London, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Greece, South Africa, Ghana and Cuba and still have a few more to go before we release our book. Our goal is simply to create art pieces that show young kids of colour the beauty of being just the way they are.”
Believe it or not it is always hard for us to get in front of the camera. Always easier to stay behind the scenes, but I know the value of capturing memories so we do it regardless of my hesitations. In love with this series of images captured of us by the talented @jensosa at the @blinkconference. She captured our personalities perfectly. ❤️ Hair by @toninatural of @xpressyourkinks salon #teamus #blinkconference #blinkconf16
When asked about her own natural hair, Kahran told The Voice “I am pretty simple when it comes to hair but I typically try to rock my natural curls at all times. It is important that I practice what I preach so that when kids come into the studio they understand that we truly stand firm in our beliefs about accepting yourself the way you are.”
So cool meeting these TRIPLETS in Ghana.
