Guide to Using Coconut Oil for Curly Hair

We are exposed to so many chemicals in our daily lives. From the food we buy to the beauty and hair products we use, so many industries rely heavily on chemicals for longer shelf-lives and efficiency when the truth is, they are not necessary and harmful at that.

Therefore, it is inspiring to see more and more people reach for natural alternatives – and there are so many of them! It truly is time to ditch the E numbers for actual vitamins, and the processed products for ingredients provided by Mother Earth.

Some natural products, such as coconut oil, serve several purposes for the body and our overall well-being. It’s as tasty of a treat to your curly hair as it is for cooking up delicious, green recipes, and the best part? It’s healthy too!

Detangle Knotty Curls

The biggest thing curly-haired people struggle with is the big, knotty mess your hair can turn into overnight. And not just overnight – using the wrong products or being exposed to the wrong (dry or humid) climates, can do an equally unpleasant number on our curls.

This is where coconut oil comes in as the ultimate savior. For the best results, warm the coconut oil up slightly or make sure it is at least at room temperature.

Dip your fingertips into it and run it from the root to the tip of your hair, separating the strands one by one, and massaging it into your curls gently. Do this prior to brushing or styling your hair and you’ll see just how much easier it will be to detangle your curls.

Deep Conditioning

The only way to keep your curls popping with a beautiful shine and a soft feel, is by ensuring they are plenty hydrated and moisturized.

Though many products promise ultra-conditioning and hydrating properties, these are cancelled out by the drying alcohols and chemicals present in their make-up, thus defeating the purpose of deep conditioning.

Coconut oil on the other hand, is rich in fatty acids, which nurture and revitalize the hair and skin. It even has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which are particularly helpful for anyone suffering from dandruff and an itchy scalp.

Use coconut oil as a conditioner once or twice a week, and you’ll start recognizing the change in your hair within no time – it will feel stronger, softer and will be much easier to detangle after washing or prior to styling.

Work the warm or room-temperature oil into your wet or damp curls and let it work its magic for at least thirty minutes – your hair needs time to absorb all the nutrients. To make this step more efficient, cover your hair in a silk scarf. Rinse it out when ready.

Alternatively, you can leave the coconut oil in overnight. This method of deep conditioning comes highly recommended by people with dense and dry Type 4 curls.

Put the Chamomile in the Coconut & Get Yourself Some Highlights

If your curls are as sensitive to the sun as your skin, you might want to consider using coconut oil as a protective layer. Filled with antioxidants and oils derived from plants, it will ward off any harm from the sun whilst keep your scalp calm.

Make the best out of the sunshine treatment by adding a little chamomile infusion or essential oil to your coconut oil. Blend it in a bottle and spray it on to your hair before you head out into the sun and you’ll soon find natural highlights in your curls.
