British Curlies - All About Naturally Beautiful Curls
Curls that vary in size and shape. Underneath you may have hermit curls that you can shrink to half the length of those on the outside ( This is another reason not to cut your hair wet)
Curls that tend to be looser, in the shape of soft S's, combined with those that are tight.
Curls that have a ropier appearance.
Hair that seems to wilt if it gets too long. ( This is because the weight of the top layer weighs the hair down)
Curls that are looser during some seasons and tighter during others.
A spring factor of 5 to 8 inches

I think im type 3c, when my hair has been freshly washed it shrinks right up, after a couple of days the curls will stretch out a bit and my hair will look longer!
I just joined and they seem to have it right, I think i’m a 3b.
only even cut my hair once so it’s quite long.
my only problem is that once I tie it up, i cant have it down again without washinging it. It just stays where the booble was.
I hope this website is as good at tips as it is at identifying hair types.
i love Jennie McAlpine’s hair!!
i always have done…..curly hair is lovely but i think i love hers more coz my kids keep saying my hair looks like hers…but im more 2c/3a…which is great.
i would love for someone to tell me what type hair i have but i think i am a 3c/4a bu my curl pattern changes from time to time! it is a really good guide especially for knowing which products are best. i do think if you are unsure pick the more ‘course’ category as more moisture for curly hair is better than less!
I agree with a lot of the comments that it is very useful to know exactly what type of curl you have since every naturally curly haired person is different, ranging from very tight curls to very loose. I seem to be a type 3A and I never really appreciated my hair when I was younger. Now I wouldn’t trade my curls for any straight haired style. I had them relaxed about 5 years ago and the growing out process was awful - let’s just say there were a lot of tears waiting for my curly tresses to grow back! Embrace what nature gave you, that’s my motto!
I’ve literally just found this website and it’s AMAZING!! y’know the best thing is realising that I’m not the only one who fallen victim to the frizzy triangle look and wants to kill the hairdresser when they’ve smugly make my head look like an 80’s electric shock. I’m the only one I know who cuts my own hair and does it once a year.. Woohoo for curlies, which ever way we do, theres something truly fabulous about having hair that catapults you into always looking unique - it’s taken me a long time to appreciate it!

This article is an excellent guide on assessing what type of ‘curl’ I have. I now know that I must be a type 3B like Alex Kingston’s. I love my curls and feel very privilaged to have curly hair. The only drawback is finding a Hair stylist locally that specialises in curly hair. I have been to so many Salon’s over the years and always come out disappointed, I really don’t think these stylist know how to deal with naturally curly hair. I don’t go to Salon’s anymore and cut my hair myself about twice a year!!!!
