How to Dye Curly Hair Without Damage

If you’re here, then you’re probably terrified of damaging your curls completely after dyeing your hair. Fortunately, I have a great guide to help you.

Having curly hair doesn’t mean that you can’t dye your hair. You just have to learn the right process to do it. Keep reading if you don’t want to miss anything!

Is It a Good Idea to Dye Your Curly Hair?

Many people wonder if colouring their hair may damage their curls. It’s a normal concern to have because you’re putting chemicals in your head.

However, many innovative products make sure that your curls keep being beautiful after you change the color of your hair. Thus, if you use the correct items and know what to do, your curls are not going to suffer.

Don’t Wash It Before

The first thing to know about dyeing curly hair is that you should never wash it on the same day. If you know when you’re going to dye it, then schedule a washing session two to three days before.

If you wash your hair right before dyeing it, you are going to strip the natural oils it produces. As a consequence, you leave your curls unprotected from the chemicals.

Go for a Semi-permanent Instead of a Permanent

Using semi-permanent hair dye is a better option than using a permanent one if you have curly hair.

First, semi-permanent hair dye has chemicals that are less intense than those in permanent dyes. Besides, if you use it, your hair is still going to have a different colour for more than a month.

Make Sure You Stay on the Clock

To get a good change in your hair, you can do online research and find the best dye for the colour you want to achieve. Then, all you need to do is follow the instructions on the package.

A very important thing to remember is to always stay inside the time frame that the dye box says. If you leave it longer, the colour might not end the way you want it. To avoid that, rinse it off a couple of minutes before the time limit.

Try Highlights

If you want to change the colour of your hair at home, you can try fun highlights instead of dyeing all of your curls!

Getting highlights is a great idea because you won’t apply chemicals to all your hair. Likewise, it’s a very fun process and it can give you a fresh and joyful outcome.

Trying highlights involves a research process, though, because there are many different types. You can get a balayage, Californian highlights, and more! What’s most important is that you find the kind you want and make it happen.

Don’t Forget about Aftercare

One of the most important things to remember when you have curly hair is that it needs constant care, especially if you dye it. Our beautiful locks are frequently prone to dryness and breakage. Now, imagine them if you use lots of chemicals on them. They can suffer damage!

Nonetheless, not all hope is lost. On the contrary – you can have perfectly healthy hair if you ensure good aftercare. To make that happen, follow your hair care routine and include hydrating masks now and then to balance out the drying effect of the chemicals.

Likewise, you could consider trimming your tips a little so you remove any dead cells that aren’t helping your curls look better. Once you’re done, your hair is going to look amazing with a brand-new colour and a shine that people might envy!

Some Things to Keep in Mind…

Changing the colour of your hair can be a terrifying process if you have no idea what to expect. Therefore, let me tell you some extra tips I’ve learned over the years.

Don’t Go to the Extremes

Having white-blond or jet-black hair sounds incredible to some, but I don’t recommend it.

If you want a drastic change, you should consider going to a professional stylist. Having very blond or dark hair usually requires a lengthy process, and if you fail a step, you might damage your curls.

Don’t get me wrong – you can colour your hair a shade or two lighter or darker than it already is. Nonetheless, if you want an extreme change, take it from me and leave it to the pros.

Some Colors Need More Time and Money

As I was mentioning, some colours need a specific process that can be difficult if you’re doing it at home. For example, if you have very dark hair and want to get a blond mane, one bleaching session is not going to be enough. You are going to need to go through it a few times, and if you do it wrong, you can end with damaged curls.

Even so, I don’t want you to feel discouraged. You can get the colour you want, and it doesn’t have to result in damaging your curls. However, you should identify when you can do it at home and when you should go to a professional stylist.

Consult Your Doubts with an Expert

If you decide to go with an expert, remember that they have lots of experience dyeing curly hair. You can trust them with all your concerns, and they should explain the process and calm your anxiety.

When you go to a professional salon, they are probably going to offer different options. You should always accept a test strand, and if they don’t mention it, ask for it yourself! That way, you can let the expert do their job on a hair sample and you can decide whether or not you like the outcome.

To Wrap Up…

Changing your hair colour can be daunting, especially if you’ve never done it before. However, curly-haired people can also pull it off! Therefore, make sure you follow all the tips I mentioned, and you are going to have an incredible outcome.
