How to Use a Hair Pick for Curly Hair

Are you looking for a way to achieve maximum volume and have some extra hairstyles up your sleeve? Using hair picks might be just what you’re looking for.

Today, I’m going to show you how I use hair picks to my advantage. Keep reading and check out my guide!

Why Should You Use a Hair Pick

If you have curly hair, you’ve been blessed with the possibility to have endless hairstyles. You can look fun and creative, or elegant and serious – it all depends on what you want to do!

However, to make your curls stand out, you need to have lots of volume. Unlike our straight-haired friends who shy away from a little volume, we embrace it! That’s why hair picks are so important.

When you use hair picks, you help your natural curls look even better. Likewise, you can style your hair different. In sum, you get extra volume and various looks!

First Step: Wash Your Hair

To show off beautiful and voluminous curls, you need to have clean hair. Thus, get in the shower and start with a good shampoo.

After that, follow with your regular routine and make sure you include conditioner so your curls look shiny.

It’s essential that you start this process with moist hair because it can help you prevent breakage and ensure that you are not going to harm it in any way when you use the pick. Therefore, wash it thoroughly and untangle all your knots before continuing.

Dry or Diffuse

Although you have to wash your hair first, you shouldn’t use picks while it’s still damp. To avoid that, you need to diffuse it or dry it.

Many people decide to let their curls air-dry to achieve the best results. There’s nothing like letting nature do its job, and it can give you an incredible look.

Nonetheless, if you’re like me and have a very big mane with thick hair, that might not be an option because it can take a lot of time. In that case, you can use a diffuser.

If you plan to diffuse your hair, just make sure that you do it upside down to get a good outcome. You can also use the diffuser on 80% of your hair and leave the rest to airdry.

Flip Your Mane

For this tip, you need a comb. Remember that you should always use medium or wide-toothed combs so your hair is not prone to breakage or damage. Thus, find a great one and let’s get started.

A great tip to work with picks is to flip your hair. Once it’s dry, flip it upside down and pick the hair at the bottom.

Once you’ve picked the hair that’s nearest to the nape of your neck, start combing from the tips to the roots. That’s going to give you lots of volume to work with.

You don’t have to comb each strand completely. Just by combing a few inches upwards, you are going to give your hair that extra pump it needs to look amazing.

Shake and Section

After flipping, shake your hair back to its usual position and wiggle a little. Make sure it’s still loose and soft. If not, untangle any knot that popped up.

Then, you should proceed to section your hair so it’s divided into more manageable parts. If you have a big mane like me, you probably need this tip a lot so that styling your hair is easier.

If you don’t section your hair, you can’t insert the picks evenly. As a consequence, you might get volume in unwanted places. Therefore, make sure to divide it according to your wishes.

Choose the Best Picks

There are two types of picks: metal and plastic ones. To know which one is best for your hair, I’m afraid that you are going to need to try for yourself.

In my case, I prefer plastic picks because they’re easy to handle, soft, and they don’t snag on my curls. However, others prefer metal ones since they believe those are more effective.

You can try both ways and see what works for you. Overall, I recommend starting with plastic picks because they’re easier to use. If you want to switch to metal ones, you can change things up later.

Use a Pick per Section

You should always use one pick per each hair section. Likewise, it’s important that you start from the roots down. Otherwise, you are not going to achieve maximum volume.

By now, you probably already worked through the roots near your neck before you flipped your head. Thus, it’s time for you to start with your crown and adjacent places.

You can only get incredible and voluminous curls if you use picks in all the sections, including the difficult ones. Therefore, guarantee that each hair strand has a pick on it.

Now that you used picks all over your hair and added lots of volume, you just have to work on the details. Remember that each time you choose a hair strand you should comb the section to the direction of the root without tugging anything because that would only cause damage.

Once you ensure that you didn’t miss any spots, you can proceed to the next step.

Finish with a Good Product

If you already used picks all over your mane, you probably have fantastic curls by now. Then, you can finish the look with a good product to make your hair look shiny and amazing.

Some good products include lotions and hair sprays. To apply a spray, remember to point from a proper distance, close your eyes, and start! After that, you are going to have an incomparable shine.

To Wrap Up…

Using a hair pick can be challenging if you’ve never tried it before. However, once you learn to section your mane properly and use the picks, it opens a universe of possibilities to achieve an incredible volume and have new hairstyles to show off!
