Curly Hair Type: Corkscrew Curls

HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones, may have ended now but its influence on the world of fashion and hairstyles continues. From the series’ launch in 2011 to the bittersweet finale just a few months ago, die-hard fans and the curious have been sporting braids a la the Mother of Dragons and experimenting with hair accessories such as leather bands, feathers, etc., paying homage to their favourite characters.

One thing most curly girls will agree on is the fact that it just doesn’t seem fair that, Missandei – portrayed by the lovely, Nathalie Emmanuel – always seems to be rocking her curls: no matter which environment or situation she finds herself in.

And, while Game of Thrones’s storyline offered up many a detail about the world these characters were navigating, the writers weren’t as forthcoming about which beauty and hair routines the queens and counselors of the respective kingdoms followed.

If you’re one of many GOT fans who is far more stuck on how to imitate your favourite character’s hair than the series’ highly disputed ending – hold the door! We’re about to let you in on all the tips and tricks needed to get those Missandei-style corkscrew curls to look positively royal.

Gently Does It

Many of us seem to have a tendency to treat our curls with Cersei-like unkindness: we use our fingernails to work in the shampoo and rough towels to dry our hair with aggressive, fast-paced motions.

It’s almost as though we’re trying to punish our hair rather than treat it with the kindness and gentleness needed for it to look and feel healthy and happy. This is especially true for corkscrew curls, which are incredibly fragile and easily frizz.

If you’re guilty of the above, it’s time for you to readjust your haircare regime and start treating your curls to the gentle and soft handling they deserve.

The first thing you’re going to have to do is scrap your scratchy dry towels from your hair care routine’s itinerary and swap it for a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt instead. These are the two best tools to use to dry your hair, as they will not cause the friction and resulting frizz you usually get from towel-drying.

Next, you’re going to want to rethink your styling methods, especially if your go-to so far has been heat. The worst thing you can do to naturally dry hair is dry it out more by adding heat – this just causes extra breakage and damage, which is what we’re all looking to avoid.

So, instead of heat-blasting your hair after your cleansing routine, opt for a lightweight styling cream to achieve your desired results. For the 4A-C, corkscrew-curl type, these really are the most important things to consider in your haircare routine.

Treat Your Corkscrew Curls to Goodness

A lot of women with natural corkscrew curls don’t care for a lot of product in their hair, which is understandable – and not necessary either. Some beauty YouTuber’s will try to talk you into using up to six different products in one washing/styling session – that’s just overkill. Not only will so many products weigh down your hair, it can also make your corkscrew curls appear extremely greasy, which is definitely not the look you’ll want.

Having said that, it is important to find one or two moisturizing conditioners and styling creams to nourish your hair and treat it to some much-needed hydration. SheaMoisture’s Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and Hair Rules’ Kinky Curling Cream always do the trick, but it’s best to experiment in order to find the right brand or product that works for you.
