US Curlies love a good home recipe for our curls. Most of us will whip up a good moisture mask but what about a styling product? Below are two tried and tested recipes for homemade hair gel that we couldn’t wait to share.
Aloe Vera Hair Gel
Aloe Vera is great for the hair. It contains proteolytic enzymes which repair dead skin cells on the scalp. It also acts as a natural conditioner leaving your hair smooth while adding shine. Many hair styling products for curly hair contain this fabulous ingredient. Top brands include: Trepadora, Jessicurl and Shea Moisture.
- 6 tbsp of conditioner
- 12 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 1/2 tsp of an oil of your choice
Mix all the ingredients together until the consistency is like thick custard. We have found an electric mixer works best for this. Once mixed, pour into a jar or a tub and store in the fridge.
Flaxseed Hair Gel
Flaxseeds are a rich source of omega-3, vitamin B1, manganese, copper, phosphorous, magnesium, and selenium which are vital vitamins and minerals that provide nourishment to the hair follicles and encourage stronger and healthier new growth. Expect a thick custard-style hair gel.
- ¼ cup flaxseed
- 1 tbsp aloe vera gel
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- ½ tbsp shea butter
- ½ tbsp coconut oil
- Boil the flaxseeds in 1 cup of water for 3 minutes. Once boiled, immediately strain.
- Pour into a mixing bowl and add the other ingredients.
- Whisk ingredients together with a mixer on high speed until it is a thick custard consistency.
- Keep in the fridge.
