What Does a Hot Oil Treatment Do to Curly Hair?

Hot oil treatment is a very popular method to protect and nourish dry hair. I tested it myself, as I was fed up with brittle hair, and I was excited to see amazing effects.

Oils like olive, almond, or coconut can seal the hair cuticle, making your hair strong and protected. I decided to do my first hot oil treatment in a hair salon, but then I learned how easy it is to do it myself at home. If you haven’t done it before but don’t want to go to the hairdresser, you can choose ready-made hot oil products and use them at home.

Remember that a hot oil treatment is very beneficial for your hair and scalp, but if used improperly it can cause a safety hazard. You should always pick an oil that is right for your type of hair. If you suffer from psoriasis or eczema, always ask your doctor for advice before using a hot oil treatment.

Benefits of Hot Oil Treatment on Curly Hair

1. Moisturize

I have curly hair and was getting mad about how dry it can be. Dry hair means frizz, which makes you look like you are a walking electricity hazard. My friend, who also has curly hair, never had a problem with brittle hair, and I asked her what she was doing to prevent it. You probably know the answer: hot oil treatment.

This beauty therapy can help to bring your hair back to life. It’s especially recommended during cold months, when you wear sweaters that can cause extra frizz on your head. Hot oil helps to keep your hair moisturized. It also smoothens hair, making it softer and easier to manage.

Your hair might be dry because it doesn’t have enough moisture. Hot oil can deposit it back into the structure of your hair.

2. Reduce Split Ends

Hot oil prevents frizz and maintains your hair ends. Because of the temperature, it seals split ends.

3. Protect from Sun Damage

Sun exposure can destroy your hair. UV rays make it weaker and can lead to discoloration. When you plan on spending the day on the beach or walking around on a sunny day, try to use coconut oil. This way, you are going to add a natural shield to your hair.

4. Add Shine

Hot oils make your hair stronger, which brings back its natural shine.

5. Improve Blood Circulation

Your hair routine is not only about beauty but also health. Your hair needs various nutrients that are transported by blood. The better is your blood circulation, the better your hair looks. Hot oil treatment stimulates blood flow, which means that your hair can get stronger in a natural way.

6. Reduce Dandruff

During cold months, when you and your hair are exposed to radical temperature changes, your scalp might get drier. That causes itchiness and leads to dandruff. With the right care, you can avoid white flakes on your clothes.

Hot oil treatment can help you get rid of this problem. You just have to apply an oil close to your scalp and massage it for a while. This way, you moisturize your head and also increase your blood circulation.

7. Deep Conditioning

As a person with curly hair, you probably already know how important deep conditioning is. Especially during winter, your hair is exposed to damages, and this is why it’s so crucial to provide your hair with all the nutrients it needs.

Adding a hot oil treatment to your hair routine even once a week can help to keep your hair beautiful and healthy. Give special attention to the ends of your hair, because this is the part that tends to get damaged the most.

How to Apply Hot Oil on Your Hair

For the first time when I was applying hot oil to my hair, I was a bit lost, but now when I know what to do it’s a quick and easy process. Here are some of my tips on how to prepare and apply hot oil:

  1. Put a small amount of oil into a bowl. The bowl should be small. Then you need to find a slightly bigger bowl, so you can place the first one in the bottom of it.
  2. Add hot water to the bigger bowl. The smaller one should be partially submerged. Be sure that the water doesn’t get into the bowl with oil.
  3. The oil has to be completely melted. When that happens, check if the temperature is right. You can use the back of your hand to be sure that the oil is not too hot. When you know the oil has the right temperature, apply it to your scalp and hair. Massage your head, so the oil can work thoroughly.
  4. Wrap a towel or shower cap around your hair and leave it for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the cap and use shampoo to clean your hair and remove the oil. You might need to repeat washing to get rid of excessive oil.

Is Hot Oil Treatment Safe?

Hot oil treatment uses plant-based ingredients, but this doesn’t make it safe for everyone. If you have sensitive skin, you might suffer from an adverse reaction to the oil.

Having sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to resign from this practice. You can reduce the risk of an allergic reaction by checking the ingredients that oils are made of. Avoid products with synthetic ingredients and choose only those that have 100 percent natural composition.

Before using new oil, always do a patch test a few days before the planned hot oil treatment. Simply apply a bit of unheated oil to the inside of your elbow. If you don’t get a rash or itchiness in 24 hours, the oil should be safe for you. If you react badly, don’t give up. Maybe other oils are going to be right for your skin.

Conclusion

Since I discovered hot oil treatment, I cannot imagine not implementing it regularly into my hair beauty routine. It brings so many benefits that are worth a fuss once in a while. Just remember to pay attention to all the safety measures to not damage your hair or hurt yourself.
